What I'd like to know is why the hell Houston signed Dan Orlovsky for 3 yrs, $9M? That guy freaking sucked in Detroit.
Did the Texans upgrade the backup QB with either of these guys compared to Sage? I don't think so considering how turnover prone Sage was. Grossman was protected by that good Chicago D and Orlovsky & Detroit, need I say more?
I can't believe people are still hating on the Orlovsky signing. He's a young guy with plenty of upside that is an ideal backup quarterback. You would think by some posts here that we brought him in with the intention of competing to be a starter, which is simply not the case. He's got plenty of learning left to do and Kubiak is known for working with QB's. Couple that with the fact that we likely would've lost Sage for nothing after the season, and instead got a 4th round pick for him. By the numbers, Sage wasn't all that much better than Orlovsky last year. Especially when you consider Orlovsky was behind one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history, and Sage was in one of the best offenses in the league. Sage: 79 QBR, 1431 yds, 66% completion, 6 TD, 10 INT, 9 sacks Orlovsky: 72 QBR, 1661 yds, 56% completion, 8 TD, 8 INT, 14 Sacks. By comparison, the two years that Grossmen played a significant number of games (2006, 2007), he posted QB ratings of 66 and 72. He is just simply not better than Orlovsky, and he has less upside. Why do people in this forum insist on making asinine posts when they obviously have no idea what they are talking about?
Defending one fail with an even bigger second fail. I like your style. If you've been watching the Texans since 2006, you would know that Schaub does not suck...AT ALL. Last year, if it wasn't for his injury, he would have been in the top 10, considering he was at the helm of the number 4 offense in the entire league. Also, if you have watched even one quarter of Grossman play, you would know that Schaub and Rex are about as similar in their styles as Shaq and Yao.
i've been having this argument with a stubborn friend of mine, who says that grossman is in fact better than schaub, and resorts to comparing grossman to favre, stating that favre had trouble finding success... so stupid...
Most people don't have a problem with Orlovsky, moreso the dumbass idea of paying him $9M. Is Charlie Casserly still calling the shots over there or something?
Sage would've easily gotten that much and more had we re-signed him. It is higher than average, but with Schaub's potential to miss a quarter of the season you need some good insurance. I'd rather spend a little more to get a capable guy (and by all account he's very similar to Schaub, which means the offense wouldn't have to adjust) than rely on a Rex Grossman or Alex Brink and drop 5 or 6 games should Schaub go down.
What about Dave Ragone? Are you saying he isn't a capable backup? : ) This is what happens when you don't draft properly and can't develop players. You end up paying way too much for mediocre players like Dan Orlovsky.
If you're implying the Texans haven't drafted properly in the Gary Kubiak era, that's one of the most asinine statements in the history of this board.
Since when under the Kubiak regime has backup QB been a priority to draft? We've had Sage the entire time. We could've taken one this year, sure, but do you want a rookie to have to start if Schaub goes down? And how exactly have we not drafted properly in the last three years?
Baqui99 went to UT (as if you didn't know), so I think we know where he's going with this theory of his...
Yeah, I know...but I thought even a UT homer of all homers would realize that Mario was the right pick by now. That's like someone who went to the same school as Sam Bowie saying he was the right pick over Jordan.
.... and if you go back and read the VY, Reggie, or someone else thread. Baqui99 voiced his opinion pretty strongly in there. Fail.
Really, so you think committing $3mm per year to an unproven BACKUP QB who no one really wanted was a good signing? Is that you, Rick?
Duane Brown had a fine rookie season. What about Travis Johnson? Basically it comes down to the Texans overpaying for an awful QB in Dan Orlovsky. Sounds like Rick Smith outbid against himself.
