I'm not a big fan of Brady Quinn, but you could use that logic for a lot of quarterbacks. Carr had very good numbers at Fresno State, as do most quarterbacks taken near the top of a draft. I don't see what makes Quinn's numbers any more like Carr's than say, a JaMarcus Russell.
I'm not all that concerned with Quinn. I think he'll definitely be a servicable qb. Used to being in the spotlight, has run a pro offense, has been a leader, played well despite some relatively crappy OL and wr play. I actually think he's a relatively safe pick, kind of like Leinart, but not as talented. But I don't think he's ever going to be an upper echelon(sp?) qb in the nfl, so plug in the other holes and look for a stopgap qb in fagency.
What logic? I just noticed a similarity. Here's some logic, though: Stats alone clearly don't tell us how a QB will perform on the next level.
Fresno State didnt play teams like USC, Michigan, UCLA, Penn State, etc. Carr didnt play under the same pressure every game, because his stage was never as big. Quinn played on national television every week. He played in a pro style offense. He got degrees in business admin. and political science in 3 1/2 years too.
I just heard on ESPN that Michael Griffin shuold be a second round pick. I know we have a lot of holes, but I wouldnt mind seeing Griffin in a Texans uni
I like Griffin a lot, led the Horns in tackling 2 seasons in a row. He's a better special teams player than Ross IMO. Isn't he tied for the lead in most blocked punts?
Does Griffin have the range to play FS in the NFL? He's a big hitter and he seems to have a knack for being at the right place to make plays. He only seems to be so-so on coverage and zone, and that would limit him to play SS. What do you guys think?
I don't think Griffin has the range or speed to be a FS in the NFL. He is a huge hitter like you said and on SportsCenter he said he is working on getting stronger and bulking up. The guy is a ball hawk though. I thought Griffin was very underrated, especially playing next to 2 Thorpe award winners. Like Demeco...they are always in or around the play. Would be a steal in the 2nd IMO.
If the Texans get him, I hope they find a new FS too. Another year of CC Brown starting at FS sure would be ugly. He'd probably make a decent reserve for both spots though.
Well, Ross' punt return abilities is what is propelling him into the first round. In my opinion though, Griffin > Ross
Yep, and while Ross is a good punt returner, I think Griffin brings more w/ punt and FG blocks. Griffin is also at covering punts, he is almost always the first and only guy to get to the returner on most plays.
may some higher power help the texans. mcshay's newest mock draft on espn.com (formerly had us getting peterson, then levi brown) now has us taking................... (drum roll) the great Brady Quinn (PLEASE NO)
The drafts I've seen has the Texans taking a DT or Peterson if he falls. They also have Levi Brown going at 10-12. If Levi Brown is available, we should grab him to shore up left tackle.
Crazy Idea - How about trading up? With Brady Quinn's stock falling, neither Detroit nor Cleveland would pull the trigger on him where they pick. If Joe Thomas is available at the 4th, if the Texans can trade up without losing picks (i.e. swapping down in a later round), they definitely should.
Detroit could use Joe Thomas maybe more than anyone else in the draft. Cleveland could be interested in Peterson fall to #8. But I don't think neither trade down w/o getting picks.
It is said that Joe Thomas has short arms, which reminds people of Robert Gallery. I'm in the Akoye camp. If he goes to the right system the kid is going to be a stud.
The other knock on Levi is that he's too slow to play LT for Kubiak. Kubiak would want to move him to guard.
