I haven't seen Branch play much this season, but scouts.com has him as the #3 player in the whole draft. Glenn Dorsey could also be an option at DT for us. 1. Joe Thomas Sr. OT Wisconsin 2. Calvin Johnson Jr. WR Georgia Tech 3. Alan Branch Jr. DT Michigan 4. Brady Quinn Sr. QB Notre Dame 5. Gaines Adams Sr. DE Clemson 6. Adrian Peterson Jr. RB Oklahoma 7. JaMarcus Russell Jr. QB LSU 8. Glenn Dorsey Jr. DT LSU 9. Leon Hall Sr. CB Michigan 10. Marshawn Lynch Jr. RB Cal 11. LaRon Landry Sr. S LSU 12. Amobi Okoye Sr. DT Louisville 13. Brian Brohm Jr. QB Louisville 14. Ted Ginn Jr. Jr. WR Ohio State 15. Adam Carriker Sr. DE Nebraska 16. DeMarcus Tyler Sr. DT N.C. State 17. Jeff Samardzija Sr. WR Notre Dame 18. Sidney Rice Jr. WR S. Carolina 19. Levi Brown Sr. OT Penn State 20. Eric Wright Jr. CB UNLV
Are you basing this on one game? Branch didn't have a good game that day, but neither did the entire Wolverine team. Like The Realy Shady posted, a lot of scouts have him rated very high, he is by far the best DT in this year's draft. Every mock I have seen has Branch going in the Top 7, so I wouldn't pity the Texans at all if they took him. If you want a shut-down corner, that's fine, but who do you want? IMHO, there is no CB worth taking in the Top 10. There are NO standout CB's in this year's draft but there's a lot of decent ones (Hall, Bennett, McCauley, Ross, etc...). If we want one, we could probably wait, but if we want the best player on defense, Branch is the guy.
Yeah, you can't base a DT evaluation based on 1 game versus a good oline. Tommie Harris wasn't much of a factor in their NC game versus LSU, looked far less of a player than Lavalai and Spears, but Harris has been the much better pro. I think if the Texans should take AP if he is there (at best 50/50 he is there). Otherwise trade down and get Lynch, Hall, Landry, Adams, Branch, Dorsey or Anderson (not listed but with Adams considered the best rush end)--some of whom will be available in the teens. AP would be my #1 choice for football reasons, PR reasons just seal the deal.
You are correct. We must look at Branch's performance against weaker, no-chance-at-all-of-making-it-in-the-NFL OLines.
Like I said Tommie Harris did nothing in the Sugar Bowl BCS national championship (in fact had a statistically unimpressive season that year) and he has been pretty good for the Bears. If a DT/NG takes up 2 good blockers but does nothing else (no tackles, sacks, TFL) he is an impact player.
I like Haynesworth from the Titans. Hear he won't be with them next year. We should pick him up on the cheap.
Yeah, we should. When we play the Cowboys he can kick them all in the face, just to pump up the crowd!!!
You can if it's a really good game against a good O-line. And Glenn Dorsey (OK, maybe ND's line isn't that great), Sedrick Ellis (USC), and Steven Harris (Florida) all showed themselves to be big-time playmakers.
Almost everyone considered USC's OL to be hands down the best in the country. And while that would definitely be a good test for a DL prospect, USC just showed they had way more talent than Michigan. USC dominated the game on both offense and defense, so I don't think you can look at 1 game and make a fair assessment.
Maybe not. Just the Texans luck if he decides to stay in school. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2727204
If Peterson doesn't do it, I don't see what he's gonna prove in college still. If he's going back to get his degree then I respect him tons for that (I'll admit to not reading the whole article). Otherwise, he's just risking injury and losing draft status to return. He's ready for the NFL, so that's not the question. The guy wouldn't get drafted any lower than number 8, and that's a guarantee. JUST DO IT ADRIAN!
AP would be stupid to return. Right now is the #1 RB prospect and sure top 10 pick. But if he stays.... -he could get injured and loss status--one more injury plauged season would really add questions despite his talent. -he could get overshowed by McFadden or others in much deeper soph RB class--and loss draft status as the #1 RB Way big down side to him staying. It would be stupid really.
Well, in retrospect, it was pretty stupid to choose OU over UT because he "wanted to win a NC". Ooops.
Peterson will declare, it doesn't make any sense to play another season at OU. 1. He is a guaranteed Top 10 pick. 2. He would be risking injury, and with his injury problems that past 2 seasons, he should know this best. 3. Next year's RB class will be good and deep (McFadden, Hart, J. Charles, etc...). 4. Next year's OU team should be much worse than last seasons.
Just a sidenote on Alan Branch, in High School he returned 5 punts for TD's. I'm all for a 330 lb. punt returner. http://huddlegeeks.com/NFL_Draft/2007/Profiles/alan-branch.htm
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2732041 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2731753 Adrian Peterson is declaring for NFL draft. Ditto for Ted Ginn Jr. and Antonio Pittman.
Don't really know a whole lot about Pittman. Where in the draft is he projected to go? Seems like a pretty good prospect.
