He's a bad ass college QB no doubt, but I still question his NFL arm strength. If the Texans stink it up this year, which looks like a possibility, they should not use their top pick on another QB. It's too much of a crapshoot. They need to get the top OT prospect available which right now is D'Brickshaw Ferguson. That has to be priority one next offseason.
No.... I had the numbers correct. They are: Yards passing: 25 Yards rushing: 95 (source: nfl.com gamebook) I know it's hard to believe, but it's true.
EXACTAMUNDO. Have you been watching the games? The passes are on the money, the receivers don't catch these passes. It's NOT Carr's fault. His arm strength is awesome compared to the rest of the league. The problem there is the pass protection. Saying we need another quarterback is like saying... ummm... I don't have an analogy, but you get my point.
I'm still fuming after that loss, I would also like to reitterate that if by the bye week which is early the Texans do not look like they belong in the league then Capers and Palmer should be fired. I would also like Casserly fired at the end of the season, this performance was about as gutless and heartless as you could ask for and sadly for this team it is not an exception. Bring on Jimmy Johnson and give him full power if that's what it takes, then let him decide who wants to play ball here. Someone mentioned Carr's not diving on the loose ball and I think he should have been benched right there.
I'll just say these few things about the Texans: 1) I don't think Carr is ever going to be anything more than a marginal QB. And I don't care for his demeanor either. The (now) two glaring examples of why I actually think he has a bit of a punk side to him: That game against Jax when he leapt over the goal line on the last play to give the Texans a win. He just barely (if at all) manages to break the plane, drops the ball, and starts running around like he just won the Super Bowl. Some may call this enthusiasm, but I believe what he was really doing was trying to 'sell' it, to remove any notion of reviewing what was in reality a very close play. To me, it was kind of bush league. And yesterday, when he ran for that touchdown, and once again it was a very close play, and one that could have easily ben reviewed, just barely technically scores, and then jumps up and 'sells' his amazing feat again. I just don't care for that way of playing. It's been said before, and bears repeating: Act like you've been there before, David. 2) Play calling. Play calling? What play calling? Seriously, the other team had to be laughing at our play calling. 2nd and 20, and Palmer calls an off-tackle for 2 yeards? How many 3-and-outs are we going to have before SOMEONE realizes that a game plan of play-calling consisting of 'Run for 2 yards, Run for two more, then Throw an incompletion on third down' is NOT going to win any ballgames? It's not as though we have a BAD offensive coordinator, it's as though we have NO offensive coordinator. Has the guy ever shown anyone any reason at all as to why he has ever been hired by any NFL team in any capacity? Seriously, you want to win this division? I know how - blackmail Indy into hiring Palmer. Then we got it made. 3) Talent level. Games like the BUffalo game happen a few more times, and people are going to start waking up to the fact that this team has a level of talent comparable to Division II college football, when compared to the Div.I talent of the average NFL team. In other words, we do not have the players on the team necessary to be competitive in the league. We cannot do the things necessary to be competitive, much less a winner: we can't protect the qb, the QB cannot raise the level of play from the players around him, we cannot overcome a lack of offensive talent by using some imaginative play-calling, because our play caller(s) HAVE no imagination, we cannot pressure the other team's QB, therefore we cannot even prevent a first-year player in his first start from making us look like what we are: a sorry expansion team. 4) Coaching. Capers, what was that?? Carr hits Gaffney with a perfect strike, hitting him on the dead run, splitting the defenders in stride, for a big gain, oops, no wait, gaffney had his back turned, and was just running, to... where? Huh? Where was he going anyway? Lord, it looked like he was headed for the locker room, because he sure wasn't in the game. That kind of crap is on the coaches. Carr couldn't believe it, which means he had a certain expectation level of what Gaffney would be doing on that play. Obviously gaffney had an alternate set of expectations, which resulted in just another blown play. Coach, would it be possible to, oh, um, I dunno, get these guys all playing on the same page, please?? Hmm?? Now I would love as much as anyone for this team to suddenly wake up and turn into a good team, maybe even a contender. But what has anyone seen to create any expectations of anything like that happening? As it stands, this team is going to be lucky if it can win more than 4 games. Sure I would like to see more than that. But does anyone have any reason to think otherwise other than pure myopic homerism? Ugh what an unwatchable mess.
How'd you like that play call in the third quarter?: Houston has 1st and 10 at mid-field, we're still only down by 5 points. What do we do? We throw a hail-mary to the endzone... not into a corner, mind you, but right up the middle into triple coverage. Is it any surprise that it was intercepted? What an absolutely aweful call.
Why are Bradford and Gaffney still playing? They've played the last 3 years and been terrible. How long are we going to give them? Derrick Armstrong outproduced both when he played last year. Give anyone else a chance at WR!!! Why do we cut Aaron Glenn who was a decent starter for us, but keep Bradford, who's been terrible?
I put all blame for our offense for the past 3 years to Chris Palmer. What a pathetic choice for an offensive coach.
hell, it ended up working like a punt. cat touched on something here that's right....opponents' secondary can sit back on us big time. they don't have to do corner blitzes...because there is zero pass protection up front. they're getting guys in quickly. that helps coverage. and the fact that he doesn't have much time to throw obviously leads to poor, rash decisions. the whole thing is screwed up. they had 2 weeks to prepare for this team, because they didn't gameplan at all for the Bucs. they did not look prepared. and they didn't make any adjustments that helped them out, either.
I'm not too sure this team could win in 5A right now. They actually looked like a high school team. O-Line might have gotten worse. Carr has not improved. Andre Johnson will request a trade after this season. Phillip Buchanon is overrated. The linebackers are actually slower. Most of all, this is the worst coaching staff in football. How in the hell do you not go for it 4th and inches, down 19-7 in the 4th quarter & then don't go for it on 4th down with only 3:30 left in the game? I don't think that Capers believes in his team and that is about the worst thing a coach can do. If he doesn't think you can pick up 2 inches, what will keep the players wanting to play? About the only positive is that you know they couldn't possibly play worse. I guess they could, but it would be tough. I just hope they can find a way not to totally embarass themselves on national tv when they play their 2 Sun. night games.
its time for capers to go. i know its just one game into the season but sometimes his playcalling leaves me scratching my head i.e. not going for it on 4th and inches. his conservative playcalling just isnt getting the job done anymore.
I would say the same thing (did you watch the game) to any of you that think Peyton Manning would do much better if he were under center. I'm not saying Carr is close to as good as Peyton Manning, because no one is, but no one in a million years could succeed given these circumstances. If we draft Young or Leinart, they're going to fail too until they get the offensive line to at least a mediocre level. As far as throwing into triple coverage, what do you guys want? Y'all were whining all preseason and last season that Carr was too safe and dumped it off to Davis too many times. You know how receivers get single coverage downfield? You wait for a blitz from the safety or corner and throw it to the receiver in isolation. But defenses never have to do that against the Texans because there's no need to rush anyone except for the defensive line and one or two linebackers! That's enough to bury Carr in less than three seconds. If you guys want to give Andre a chance to make plays downfield, Carr's going to have to throw into double coverage... and sometimes those passes will get picked off. While Carr usually doesn't have any time to throw, it's not as simple as picking out a few plays a game where he actually does and saying "see, he doesn't do anything when he had a chance." In addition to facing more pressure, he's facing more defenders than other quarterbacks do because the opposition doesn't have to blitz to put him under pressure.
To add insult to injury Aaron Glenn got an interception at the end of the Dallas game. I would be lying if I said I was sad to see him go, but after watching the Bills pick on Phillip, Casserly looks like he may have made another mistake. To me, if they get rid of Capers, they need to get rid Casserly. I wanna say it was only one game, but its like Matt Jackson said on his post game show, its really not when you consider how they finished last year against The Browns.
I didn't get to see the game, but for every "type" of defense, there is an offense to counter it. If they are getting immense pressure, run some quick out routes, some screen passes, some quick 3-step-drop-and-throw fade routes to sidelines. They can't be triple covering everyone, and sideline routes can't be double covered quickly since the safeties are in the middle of the field. You have a phenomenal receiver - throw it up for grabs to him occasionally, but pull him away from the safeties. Put your receivers all over the field. Go 5-wide, put Carr in shotgun, and have him get the snap and throw within 2 seconds. Or go with 1 TE and 2 RBs in the backfield and leave them all for blocking, and then have just 2 receivers out there, but send them towards the sidelines so you can't double or triple cover them quickly. There are lots of things to try - I'm not sure any of them will work, but if what you're doing is not working, why not try something different? This is the OU syndrome. We keep doing the same stupid offense - if running up the middle hasn't worked the last 15 times, it's not going to work on the 16th try. Like I said, I didn't get to see much of the game past the first quarter, but from reading these posts, I gather we did not try anything particularly different.
I really don't want to ride Carr all season but its spin attempts like this that forces some of us into the other extreme. this is ridiculous. the last sentence suggests that no qb completes passes when they aren't blitzed.
