I know the Texans won't spend a 1st round pick on another QB but in a way it makes sense. If the O-Line sucks and you need that type of QB then its worth a try. Vick is not a great passer but you can chalk him up for 10 wins every year beacuse he makes plays for his team and thats the same for Young. He is a terrible passer but the guy makes plays.
And whose fault is that? It's laughable that ESPN mocked the awful line play 2 years ago with the (in)famous David Car commercial with no lineman and yet here we are talking about sacks, hurries, and gaping holes despite having more draft choices than any team. Charlie Casserly is a very mediocre GM who has yet found the diamonds in the roughs that separate mediocre teams from good ones and good teams from great ones. The highlight of his career is converting Drew Henson to a 3rd round pick. Woohoo. Maybe if Mike Ditka gets another job, he can rip him off again and so he can be considered a genius. And Heath Shuler is hanging out with Bennie Joppru and Tony Hollings at the hot tub.
Yea... but Vick looks like Joe Montana with his passing when you compare it to Young's. I'm still not convinced Vince will be able to make it in the NFL as a QB... sometimes, he has no clue where its going when he throws it.
I never said Casserly was free of blame. If he thinks the O-line is fine, he deserves to go. If there is honestly nothing that can be done about the O-line either this year, or in the off-season, he will be fired.
I don't get Charley Casserly. He spends all this money on Morlon Greenwood, Seth Payne, Gary Walker and he refuses to sign a solid olineman. This offseason he could have gotten Marco Rivera, Mark Wahle, or Ross Verba. He overpayed for Morlon Greenwood, who is a very small linebacker who only get tackles, no INT's or sacks. The defense last year played very well the last 5 games last year and he breaks it up. Then he trades a 2nd and 3rd round pick for Buchanon. He was horrible last year for the Raiders. He was also horrible today versus the Bills.
Makes you wish when Bob McNair and Jimmy Johnson were hanging out together at the Astrodome, that the Texans somehow came up during the conversation.
I take back everything I said in this thread. If we play like we did today, we WILL be the doormat of the league, and Buffalo will be a contender.
Vince Young is still developing as passer. He has looked better every year. David Carr at Fresno State was average his first 3 years. He would have been a 3rd or 4th round pick before his Senior year. If Vince Young comes out this year, he will be a 1st round pick.
And now you're criticizing a guy who might be UT's best qb in over a hundred year history. Nick=one of the last guys who thinks Carr is infallible and one of the last guys saying Young won't be playing QB on Sundays. LOL The experts were already talking about possible number 1 draft pick yesterday. Join us in 05.
Charley also for some reason refuses to sign veterans. I am talking about 32 year plus years players. Once you become 30 on the Texans, they will cut you. We need some veterans.
I can't really put all the blame on David Carr on this disaster of an offense. It is an offense designed and destined for faliure. The play calling today resembled that of a high school offense...ops now I am disrespecting high schools, I meant pee wee football. The management has no clue on how to fix this mess, same damn offensive problems every year. Everybody and their momma knows what the Texans are going to do on first and whatever. Someone needs to go up to that booth and smack some sense in to Palmer. I'm tired of hearing Dom Caper's excusses on his monday radio show, enogh is enough. Rockets basketball can't come soon enough.
It's funny when the night guys on 610 interviewed the beatwriter for the Dolphins on the upcoming season, they asked the writer for his opinion of Greenwood and he said "he a real nice guy", then the night guys asked him how he was as a football player and replied "he is a real nice guy"....Also my brother live out in San Diego and when the Chargers would go up against the Raiders, Brees would look especially for Buchanon and constantly look to throw against him. (kind of reminds you of the Bills constantly looking for him in the first half). Looks like we should have stayed with the solid, but not great vet that we had, rather than on the youth and potential they could become.
To be fair, Vince tends to float the ball on medium and long routes which you can do in college but not in the NFL. He probably will be the best QB the school ever had and probably one of the most talented players regardless of position (and maybe the best when he's done). However, being a great college QB does not mean you can be a great NFL quarterback, especially if he's on a terrible team.
In my opinion, if Dom Capers ever lets another team walk onto the field as ill-prepared as we were today, he should not even walk off the field as the team's coach. He should be canned on the spot. That was absolutely horrific. As far as Casserly goes, if we have a somewhat bad offensive line next year, he should be gone, too. He's had 4 years to shore that thing up, and it's still looking worse than it did on our franchise opener. I know a lot has been made about us being bad as fans, but today was pitiful.
First of all, I never said Carr was infallible... I said the O-line is worse at protecting than he is at passing. Second of all... I've watched Vince since his HS days... and while he's improved IMMENSELY at throwing the ball... he still has nowhere near the accuracy he will need to beat the more complicated coverage schemes and more athletic CB's that there are in the NFL. I'm as big of a UT homer as possible... and I hope that he'll continue to work hard and improve... but right now, he would simply have to get by on his god-given athletic ability (and that actually might serve him well enough). Finally... do you honestly think that any other QB in today's NFL not named Manning or maybe Vick could actually succeed here with this line? We've seen what Brees looks like with a bad line... same with Warner, Bledsoe, Collins and Pennington when they've played behind horrid lines over their careers. Throughout this franchise history... in games that the line has protected well, we've likely won... and Carr has looked pretty good in those wins. They've already proven they can run-block with some consistency, but they have yet to prove they can pass-block with any sort of regularity... and I'm talking about blocking against the average defenses in this league, not the elite ones.
Yeah Young has to be a 1st round pick. That guy is a winner. Clutch ball player. I start believing in him ever since the Rose Bowl last season.
I agree. I remember there was this one play where they were 2nd and 20 and tried to run the ball and got a whooping 1 yd gain! Then then proceed to throw long on 3rd and failed. The offense was just horrible. I can't wait to see how we'll do against the Steelers next week. =X
Some absolutely alarming Houston stats: Carr sacked 5 times resulting in 45 yards lost Carr intercepted 3 times 2 fumbles only 25 yards passing only 95 yards rushing total yards for entire game: 120 avg. gain per pass play: 1 yard That's very, very crappy offense.
