Jets to franchise star DE… The Jets have reportedly told three-time Pro Bowl DE John Abraham that they plan to place the franchise tag on him for a second consecutive season. Abraham, who had wanted a long-term deal but now simply wants out of New York, according to those close to him, will earn $8.3 million next season. Even though the Jets will tag Abraham, they may still try to trade him, with San Diego, Washington, Cleveland and Houston being mentioned as possible destinations. The tag and trade scenario might be easier said than done for the Jets, however, who are already something like $26M over the 2006 salary cap and franchising Abraham would eat up $8M.

I think theres a really good possibility for a Carr for Abraham deal on draft day if VY falls to #4. NY could come out of this draft Carr and Bush. They despertly need a QB and a RB. We would get a quality DE we despertly need, draft our QB of the future/hometown hero and get extra picks to fill some of the many needs we have on this team. Next year with 2 first round picks we could fill 2 more needs or trade up and get WR Johnson Georgia Tech or RB Peterson Oaklahoma. This team would be rebuilt.

That would be sort of cool, but how do you anticipate VY falling to 4?

Going ahead of him: Bush, Leinart, ...

Cutler, Ferguson, Mario Williams. Who knows, there's still two months until draft day, someone's stock might soar by then, and VY's might fall.

Unless you are suggesting that VY couldn't start right away. Then the answer to your Q is Ragoane or veteran free agent pick up.

Hey, I love Vince Young.....but you and I know that he needs some seasoning. Get Sherman to bring in Favre.

What would qualify as "screwing this up".....if we don't trade for him? The Texans aren't even mentioned in the article.

Man, you guys are harsh. Let's try something new...if you don't have anything to say other than ripping a post...don't say anything at all.

First off, what I meant was that I would hope that the Texans try to do whatever they can to go after Abraham. Secondly, by "official" I just meant that it's now been reported by credible sources that the Jets are shopping him.

    Latest from ESPN Insider:

    John Abraham

    Redskins?
    Texans?
    Chargers?
    Browns?
    Broncos?

    Abraham for No. 1 pick?

<Feb. 28> Newsday is reporting that the Jets might be using Abraham as bait in an attempt to acquire the the No. 1 overall draft pick from the Texans. Such a deal would allow the Jets to pick USC QB Matt Leinart.

"The Giants traded up from No. 4 to No. 1 to get Eli Manning," a source told Newsday. "So why not the Jets? This could be their chance to make the same kind of splash as the Giants. Leinart has that star quality that would play well in New York."

According to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, the Jets have been offering Abraham in trade talks during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Although the Jets have discussed potential scenarios with a number of teams, it's believed the talks have not moved to the substantive stage with any suitors.

Among the teams with whom the Jets have spoken are the Redskins and the Broncos, reports Pasquarelli.

Last week, the Jets designated Abraham a franchise player for the second year in a row, essentially limiting his potential mobility as a free agent. Abraham, who has wanted a long-term deal for some time, has told his friends and agents he doesn't want for the Jets anymore.

After appearing in just 19 games in 2003-2004 because of injuries, Abraham played in all 16 games for the Jets in 2005. He registered 67 tackles, 10½ sacks, six forced fumbles, one recovery and two passes defensed.

Now it's being shot down by the Jets:

    Abraham goes on trade block

    BY GARY MYERS
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

The Jets have begun shopping John Abraham, are still negotiating to get Chad Pennington to take one of the largest pay cuts in NFL history and have no interest in trading with Houston to move from the fourth spot in the draft all the way to the very top.

    --------------------------

The draft rumors are starting early this year, but the Jets are not one of the teams interested in trading up to Houston's No. 1 spot. "There's nothing to it," said a source familiar with the Jets' thinking. As long as the Texans take RB Reggie Bush at No. 1, the Jets will get one of the top three QBs at No. 4: Matt Leinart, Vince Young or Jay Cutler.
