I am sad that he doesn't have more power in the organization. Who the hell thought, "yeah, David Culley is who we want?"
I have a very hard time believing that Caserio took the GM role without being able to pick his coach. Especially given the details surrounding the hire. The guy has had two decent drafts but call it what it is - he’s blown it on consecutive HC hires and is now in a position that he’s likely going to have to hire a third next year. If he doesn’t - then you’re talking about your highly drafted QB (assuming we take one in next years draft) having to go through multiple coaching regimes. That’s never a recipe for success. If Cal understood football- he’d have the full regime on a very short leash and would be kicking tires behind closed doors.
What details about the hire lead you to believe that? I don’t recall Caserio getting any interest from teams that off-season. He wasn’t even mentioned for the Texans job until Cal and Easterby picked him up and essentially hired him on the spot. In other words, don’t think he was negotiating from a position of power. Also the last 2 HC searches were complete $hit shows which leads me to believe Cal was running things as we have seen this multiple times from him before.
He was rumored to be signing on with full control as GM for the Panthers. That’s why they had to sweep in and sign him at the urging of Easterby. Our team was also in shambles and had no picks and a strained relationship with the star quarterback. That’s leverage for the incoming gm. Not for ownership.
Full control doesn’t necessarily mean sole control over the HC. Most of the time it just means full roster control (which Caserio was looking for). Unfortunately we probably won’t ever know the truth but the last two coaching searches had Cal’s greasy fingerprints all over it. No direction whatsoever, long and drawn out, Easterby at the table, and all ending with a big WTF. Much like the GM searches in 2019 and 2021.
I'm actually on board with keeping Lovie around for another season. That will ensure another season of suckage and another high draft pick in 2024 when I want Caserio to draft a QB.
There was definitely a report out saying Texans wouldn’t hire a HC until a GM was hired. Wouldn’t even take interviews for HC at the time. I don’t see how you’re hired with “full control” and not be able to pick a HC.
That was false the Texans were conducting interviews before Caserio got hired. I remember the Texans didn’t interview bieniemy until Caserio got to Houston when all the fans wanted to interview him.
That #1 pick reality is looking really good. The CLE pick....most likely the 9th or 10th pick or into the early teens from what I'm guessing once that sexual predator is back.
