Don't think you were there or really saw it... Sam Bowie was a really good center while he played. His problem wasn't talent or understanding the game, it was injuries, staying on the court. Bowie will always be the poster child for picking need over talent, the best available Center over MJ. Still, when he was healthy he was a real player and a perfect fit for the Blazers. Had he stayed healthy there would still have been a debate over picking him ahead of MJ, but it would have been viewed as a mistake not as one of the great blunders of all time.
