PSJ -- I don't think it's as easy as "get 'em back together and they'll laugh about it at practice." i don't think that's the case. there's too much water under the bridge. this isn't the first time that TO has done this. isn't the first time he "apologized" and came back. TO has a tremendous chip on his shoulder. He's had problems everywhere he's been. He's called out Garcia and McNabb...personally. He's had problems with Mariucci and Reid. He completely railed the Baltimore Ravens. It's on him. It's repeat behavior. Someone somewhere will give him his "second" chance. My bet is you see a repeat.
I'd be pretty surprised if Philly changes its tune. They have ALWAYS prided themselves on the decision that management makes (i.e. not resigning certain guys....not spending a ton of money, etc). I see them fully standing behind their decision.
Owens "apology" was ****e, take a look a him back there rocking and bowing his chest up while Rosenhaus was speaking. Rosenhaus was only saying what TO knew he hadn't better say. Someone close to TO needs to get in his ear and ask him if his career is better off since hiring Rosenhaus. At this point who cares what happens to TO but hopefully something good can come of this and other NFL players see how much damage Rosenhaus has done to TO's career, and that is not to say TO isn't largely to blame, but hopefully more players will see how badly mismanged this whole situation has been by Rosenhaus and fewer players will choose him for representation and that will be very good for the league.
If I were the eagles i'd tell him to fire Rosenhaus, get a new agent and then would give him one more chance.
I found it cowardly that he had read a written statement in this situation. How hard would it of been to say sorry without reading a piece of paper that was probably written by someone else? He talks all this junk and then can't be a man and truthfully apologize. And then to further prove his cowardness, he steps away before questions could be asked. SAD SAD SAD... I wouldn't touch this guy if I were a NFL team because you know what you are gonna get. A SPOILED COWARD... First it was Mariucchi's fault... Then Jeff Garcia's, then the Greg Knapp's, then the 49ers as an organization. Then it was McNabb's, then the Eagles, then Andy Reid's, then back to McNabb's fault. Then back to the Eagles. The common underlying factor in all these issues was Owens. I can't accept a man who continously blames other people. That's not a man.
I can. The Eagles did try to low-ball TO. You can't say he doesn't deserve to be paid more based on his production, especially considering that he risked his career to play for them in the Super Bowl. I am not saying he went about it the right way, but the Eagles have some blame too.
He was getting what he deserved....the paycheck he agreed to receive when he signed the ****ing contract. It's about damn time a team stands up to the bullying tactics more and more players are using these days to get out of binding contracts. His self-centered, unappreciative ass got himself in this position. Not his team. Not his teammates. Not Michael Irvin. Not his agent. Just TO. I still hope he gets hit by a bus.
Noone made TO sign the contract, it's not like he was some rookie deal producing like he was. The guy is egotistical and I hope the only work he can find is in Arena football or the Canadien league. Goodbye and Good riddance.
I think he has every right to try and get a new contract as does every other NFL player. If the organization can simply tear up the binding contract, then a player has every right to hold out or try to get a new contract. Of course, most people don't go about it the way T.O. did, but let's quit acting like he's an ******* for wanting more money. If the club has the right to tear up his contract, he has a right to try and get a new one.
The Eagles do take some blame here, they knew this guy's history and if he performed like he did they should have been prepared for the situation. Their position now isn't admirable, now they look like fools, they sold their souls last season by joining up with him.
Of course it's the organizations that allowed contract renegotiations to occur, but there is a right way and a wrong way to conduct business. He's not a ******* for wanting more money. He's an ******* for the way he goes about wanting more money. TO is a whiny, self-centered b****. Watch out for the bus TO, it's coming for ya and RocketsPimp can't wait to hear about it.
I agree with all of this. I just don't think his motiviations can be criticized (without criticizing the owners for cutting whoever despite their "binding" contracts), just the means he used to try and obtain them.
I admit complete ignorance in the area of NFL contractural obligations. Now, with that disclaimer out of the way ... Is a team really allowed to "tear up" a contract whenever it wants?
They're still obligated to pay the signing bonus and there are salary cap considerations, but yeah, basically.
Even though I know jack about the NFL, I *still* thought you must be smoking crack. Good thing I held my tongue, because you are absolutely right. Here's an interesting FAQ that confirms everything you said: http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp Teams certainly have a lot more power in the NFL than they do in the NBA.
