Ya ever think that it might have gone down this way:
Bud thinks, "If we could build those improvements, it'd bring more money in for me and help me recoup some of the cash I'm having to pay McLane."
So the improvements were made, and then maybe McLane said, "Hey - since the dome's been improved, I'm gonna raise your rent, Bud." Forcing all of that intended recoup'ed money to go into McLane's pockets and leaving Bud back to square one.
I'm not saying it DID go down like that, but it's very possible.

If there was any indication of that...or even a claim from Bud that it went down that way...it would be worth considering. But I've never read or seen anything that suggests that.

It still has zero to do with the, "oh, yeah..the Rockets will play here! this is a joint venture with them!" lie that led off the move to Nashville.

Agreed. Bud certainly screwed the pooch on that.

You really should quit bringing this up as you are being very misleading. Bud's proposal was in early '94. He didn't sign the agreement w/Nashville until August of '95. That leaves a year and a half where they could have tried to work something out. They were given every opportunity to come to the table.

What part of the Houston Taxpayers not paying a cent for Reliant Stadium do people not understand?

As opposed to Houston Taxpayers having to pony up 160 million for the Bud Dome?

    0 < 160 million

Financially, the city of Houston didn't take a hit when the Oilers left or when the Texans replaced them. It was more of an emotional loss losing the Luv Ya Blue history and starting all over with another team devoid of history.

But to get Bud Adams out of town, many would say it was worth it.

    V,

I agree, but you don't think Houstonians use hotels or rent cars?

But, let's say we agree on that, why not offer that deal to Bud to keep the team, and let him toss in $70 million of his own money.

The problem is......that Bud demanded rennovations to the Astrodome, just a couple of years earlier or he would move to Jacksonville......the city complied.....but the renovations were NOT ENOUGH....the landscape of the NFL changed, and PSL's....and football only stadiums were what was needed to keep up.

Bud went back...and for more than a year was stonewalled.......he made an error in signing an exclusivity deal with Nashville, but I think he felt that Houston under Bob Lanier was not going to budge.

Houston and Bob Lanier lost.....they let the Oilers go.....and then turned around and built MM park and a new Rockets facilty (which almost did not pass by the way).......

They should have done the same for the Oilers......that team had been there for 30+ years.......and Bud did not sneak it away at night, he just explained he could not compete under the Astrodome's rules with the new NFL dynamics.

And because of the short sightedness of Lanier and some ignorance of the Houston fans.....they left......leaving the city with crappy expansion football.....and a lot of us with our hearts ripped out.

Cooler, calmer heads should have prevailed.

    Exactly.

There she is... a Christmas Carol... :D

    I AGREE. FREAK TENNESSEE.

Whilst I got to go to the OILER games in the late 80's (the one I remember the most was the Monday Night win against the Bengal kitties) and some games in the final years, I hate the fact that THEY LEFT ME like a bride at the altar. NO Super Bowl appearance, no AFC Championship (same thing, I know, but it hurts more if I say it twice), disappointments at home against the Steelers and Chiefs (f*king Montana  )... all kind of make me glad they left. I love them while here, but I don't love them AWAY. Eff them.

Are you kidding? I would kill to sniff the playoffs.....and that team...with JEFF FISHER is the only undefeated team in the NFL.....

The City of Houston would be all over them if they stayed.

I'm not going to lie, if the Texans switched name and logo with the Oilers, I'd become a new Houston Oilers fan instantly.

You don't represent the majority of Houstonians.

Joe Sixpack and Soccermom Wendy who's lived in Houston for the past 30 years don't rent cars or stay at hotels while in town.

If you happened to feel the brunt of the stadium fees, consider yourself the exception rather then the norm.

    DD,

I'm not gonna lie, the city of Houston and Lanier were too stubborn to even listen to Bud's ideas at all before it was too late. But how can anyone in the city of Houston even consider listening to that guy after the stunts he's pulled before? You keep doing business with a guy who has a history of pulling the rug on you and demanding more from you and it's understandable that you'll turn a deaf ear on him eventually.

And all team owners are slimeballs who are here to make a profit. To me it was a matter of which owner was more bearable to keep in town. Mclane was new on the scene and didn't have the bitter history that Bottomline Bud had. Looking back at history, I still think the right owner was shown the door, even though my thoughts on McLane has turned sour throughout the years, and especially after the Ike fiasco.

Everyone is mad about the history. Why? Besides the Browns, what relocated team got to keep their team history? The norm is to lose it....not keep it.

Edit: The Sonics get to keep theirs too if they get a new team there in time. But most don't. The Lakers (and they won stuff), Grizz, Stars (and they won stuff), Chiefs, Rams, Raiders, Colts (and they won stuff), Jazz, etc didn't. And honestly, if I'm an owner...especially one who founded the team like Adams and went through all the seasons where I didn't get full support...if I leave you better believe I'm taking MY TEAM'S history with me. The Oilers had our hearts, but it was still Adams property.

IIRC, the only reason the Browns and Sonics got to keep theirs is because their owners had to get permission from the city to leave, and the name/history was a bargaining chip for the city.

I don't think you will find anyone who wouldn't feel the same way. But since it ain't gonna happen, what's the point?

I will pull for any team with any logo or any name or any history (or lack thereof) as long as that teams plays in Houston.

See, I figured that eventually Bud was going to die anyway, so just deal with the devil you know...and then when he croaks hope the next owner is better.

if you had a choice of :

    1. moving the Texans, bringing back the Titans and renaming them the Oilers again, but getting rid of the Astros and baseball

    2. having the Texans swap teams and owners with the Raiders

He has 2 daughters (only son committed suicide) and wife is Vice Chairman of the Titans. Ownership will just pass through the family.

What really gets me are two things that pertain to the historical aspect:

    1) #34 hangs in Tennessee. Earl's number should be retired HERE. Let Bud keep it retired for the franchise. Bob needs to retire it HERE.

    2) Warren Moon's HOF speech happened in Tennessee. Let Bud honor the guy. Moon played for Bud, after all. But Warren Moon should have been honored HERE.

I don't know what kind of rules are involved for such instances, but IMO, Bob should have done something. I'm not even much of a football fan, but those two things REALLY piss me off.
