Exactly.....the guy started football in Houston, paid large dollars to bring in Warren Moon....and although cantankerous, he clearly wanted to win...

One more thing, no matter what Drayton said, the Astrodome was a CRAP hole by this time......and how ironic was it that Drayton used Bud leaving as leverage to take the Astros to Washington if he didn't get a new stadium...but all is forgiven there...?????

Sheesh, do you guys, like, cower under the bed in a fetal position and tenderly cry when you see or hear any news about your ex wives or girlfriends? Be MEN for cryin’ out loud!

I view the Oilers like an ex girlfriend. I loved them with all my heart and soul while they were here, but once they left me, eff ‘em. I’ve moved on. You guys should try it. It’s very empowering.

Besides, can you imagine how the people of Baltimore feel when they see the Colts who actually kept their name and uniform along with their history on Sportscenter every Sunday night? Forget about the Colts dropping a 4-TD shellacking on their new team just a week ago.

drayton is clearly a better politician, which is no knock on him but it is funny that people never bring up the fact that he did basically the same thing to get his stadium.

if you can make money in the grocery supply business like he took his family company and expanded it, you're a great business man which includes all aspects of business including public relations.

Being men means learning from past mistakes and not letting them happen again......

I think you confuse the issue, I am no Titan's fan...but I think the city of Houston made a huge financial mistake by letting the Oilers walk.....

And while Bud may not have been popular, someone should have looked at the BIGGER picture for the city and kept the team.

This hard lesson saved the Astros and the Rockets....so the city learned, but for people to be blaming Bud Adams is beyond Naive !

Bingo. If your team name doesn't start with "The Houston ________", f*** off. I'm a HOUSTON sports fan much more than a fan of any individual. If you don't want to be in Houston, that's fine with me. We'll replace you with bigger and (eventually) better.

You all seem to forget about the times before Drayton was involved. Remember who threatened to move to Jacksonville? Remember who was responsible for tearing down the greatest scoreboard in sports history?

that scoreboard was tore down to keep the dome competitive, this is an example of how staying in the dome was ludricous. yes, it was stupid to expand and then leave the city with all the debt because the expansion wasn't feesible long term in keeping the dome competitve.

but tearing down the scoreboard was a move to try and keep the team here. you can't have it both ways

    Ed Fowler?

    Yeah, he is unbiased...ROFLMAO !

The guy basically lost his main function as a writer when the Oilers left.

Compared to a Houston Press cronie?

At least he wrote a book, and not a snippet. I prefer people who at least have research based upon their conclusion.

I hope Bud brings back the Oilers jerseys.

The Astrodome was a problem. My bad for confusing McLane with Harris County...McLane sure damn acted like he owned the place. Remember the preseason game that was cancelled cause the field had dips? Astros fans forget McLane's about face about the dome after the Oilers left town.

Bud made mistakes. For one, he shouldn't have conceded for dome renovations when he threatened to move to Jacksonville. It was idiotic cause the dome was a pos for football. Second, he picked a horrible time to threaten to move again...the Oilers sucked ass in the mid 90s. Third, he got into an ego match with Mayor Jackass.

It doesn't matter though cause they're gone and Houston now has the Texans. It's sad the Oilers never had a place to call home in Houston.

    My point was...

I saw a lot of hatred at Bud Adams here and I've always felt that Bud, while certainly deserving of blame, was probably not the one who deserved the primary focus of hatred.

People generally like Drayton. Fans may have problems with him...but he's respected in the business community. Remember it was private money that bought the land where MMP sits and was donated. Ken Lay led that charge. :)

No one stepped up for Bud.

Kinda hard to do when the guy you'd want on the other side of the table signs an exclusive negotiating deal with Nashville and can't talk to you for a year.

Bud's original proposal was all based in lie, dada. How can you keep ignoring that? He came in saying he had talked to the Rockets...he sold it as a MULTI-PURPOSE DOME. That was the selling point. Only he hadn't talked to the Rockets. And when they backed away from the negotiations saying they wanted nothing to do with it, it killed any legitimacy of the deal. Not to mention that it was the second verse of the very same song we had all just heard a few years prior. I remember the initial reaction from the public was: "we've heard this before...bud isn't going anywhere...we just renovated the dome for him." There was no public support for building a new stadium on the heels of that. And no one in the private sector came forward to take Bud's back.

Yeah..we shouldn't focus it on the guy who pulled the rug out from under us after investing taxpayer money to meet his demands...and then who lied throughout the second part of the deal, and then signed an exclusive to not negotiate with us at all after he made an ass of himself (again) in the public's eye.

Look...when you play ball like that, you'll find you'll play it alone. If you can't be trusted, no one is going to step up for you. That's where it came with Bud. Fool me once...fool me twice...you know the drill.

You forgot about the part where Bud threatens to move the Oilers because he is not making enough money on luxury boxes. Houston put millions of dollars of renovations into the Astrodome. A few years later Bud threatens to move the team again. This time he wants a new stadium. That was a big douchbag move, and the reason he got no support. Fans did not want to be continuously extorted with the threat of moving the team.
