WTH? How about because he can? We dont lose anything by signing promising players to non-guaranteed contracts, and we have everything to gain if they pan out. Unlike you I'm curious to see how Temple's game translates into the pros, he might just be the diamond in the rough we're looking for.
BimaThug and Melechesh, I tried out realgm's trade checker. I sent Barry and, for giggles, Dorsey to Boston. Atkins, Wilkins, Scalabrine, the names originally thrown about. I might have thrown in Kendricks, hence throwing in Dorsey (Perkins is probably a dealbreaker in all this, but oh well). I made the trade so that Houston took back no players. I was surprised; I thought realgm would say, You can't do that, Houston has to take back a player. But the trade went through. Of course, I didn't look at how many players each team has on its roster.
I tried ESPN trade machine and both (yours and mine) scenarios failed. We neglected the fact that neither Wilkins nor Atkins could be dealt in combination with other players since they're newly acquired by the T-Wolves of which the team salary is above the cap.
I'm sure salary matching is not a problem here for the Rockets 'cause CBA didn't actually set a lower limit of the salaries teams take in. It's the 125% + 10m upper limit that has to be considered. The real problem is what I've described in my previous post.
Take another look at my post: That trade restriction (for both Atkins and Wilkins) expires on September 27. The Boston reporter originally quoted makes reference to this date.
Brent Barry, Brian Cook, Joey Dorsey and Jermaine Taylor for Oleksiy Pecherov, Brian Cardinal, 2011 2nd round pick and 2012 2nd round pick. Houston C: David Andersen/Oleksiy Pecherov/Chuck Hayes PF: Luis Scola/Carl Landry/Pops Mensah Bonsu SF: Shane Battier/Trevor Ariza/Garrett Temple SG: Tracy McGrady/Chase Budinger/James White PG: Aaron Brooks/Kyle Lowry Injured: Yao Ming Brian Cardinal bought out. Minnesota C: Al Jefferson/Ryan Hollins/Mark Blount PF: Kevin Love/Joey Dorsey/Brian Cook SF: Ryan Gomes/Corey Brewer/Damien Wilkins SG: Johnny Flynn/Wayne Ellington/Jermaine Taylor PG: Ramon Sessions/Antonio Daniels/Chucky Atkins Brent Barry Retires
Why? It lowers our roster count, gives a 7 footer who is 23 and perfect for Rick Adelmans offense and 2 2nd round pick that will most likely be pretty low. The price? Brent Barry (Old and most likely retiring if traded), Brian Cook (Never going to play), Joey Dorsey (Was gonna lose a roster spot to Pops anyways) and Jermaine Taylor (A rookie scorer who couldn't even do the one thing he said hes good at in Summer League). The only player in this trade I could see people not wanting to trade is Taylor since we invested so much into him but I think getting 2 2nd round picks in return is enough to cover it.
http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2009/09/stros_back_not_quite_but_it_wa.html So Barry's either traded in a scenario close to the one above (Rockets save $1.3M not incl. White) or he's bought out for around $1M (if Boston has already agreed to sign him for the vet min, $1.4M)?
Well, it looks like that three-way deal with Boston/Minny/Houston that would have dumped Barry on Boston is a no-go. Chucky Atkins (and his partially guaranteed deal that would have enabled the Rockets to dump Barry's contract at minimal cost) has officially been waived by Minnesota. http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/wolves/2009/09/22/wolves-waive-atkins-with-camp-a-week-away/
Yessssss!...I wanted to get lebron or wade next year, but forget that....We have temple and conroy..our season is saved
If the Rockets and Barry have an existing deal with the Celtics... Buying him out for less the vet's min would be pretty much the same as getting Atkins's contract.
