This is a good list of 5 Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston. Personal preferences could make anyone switch these 5 up, (For example, I would go: El Tiempo Pappasito's Ninfa"s on Navigation Chuy's Lupe Tortilla.) Regardless, any of these are better than anything in NYC for Tex Mex. As for Pappacito's, I'll chime in with the Matamoros platter. I get it everytime. Half order of beef fajitas, half order of baby back ribs. Awesome.
^this is absolutely true but things are getting better, at least the more authentically mexican, taqueria type places. mexicans are the fastest growing ethnic group in NYC but i don't know if we'll ever get tex-mex up here because that food is fom tex not mex.
bingo... their fajitas are some of the best anywhere, particularly the beef. el tiempo has similarly excellent beef fajitas, but they are equally as expensive. after that, go hit up some more whole in the wall joints for things like authentic tacos, tortas, menudo, etc.
I'd say Lupe's has the best Beef Fajita's and if you want to stay on the NW side, there is one on 249 near Spring Cypress.
I think you are the only person on this board who would say that. I've been 2-3 times and have always been disappointed, and that is the general consensus I get from anyone I've spoken to who has been there. I'm pretty sure this comment means you haven't tried the other places.
Unless they have children why would anyone want to go to Lupe's? I went once and there was nothing but little kids running around. Do they not have a big kid's section? It was like a Chuck E Cheese Pizza. I would take someone from out of town to a La Tapatia.
i can see how it could be annoying. i must admit that when i'm in houston this is my tex-mex joint of choice because of the big outdoor sandbox. it keeps the kids happy while mommy and daddy are getting loaded on margaritas
really? there is a sandbox for the kids to play in. but i've never had a problem with kids interrupting my meal. of course, i have kids so maybe i don't notice.
Haha. I don't think you are the only one who has come up with that plan. That's why I stay away. The children are everywhere.
i just ate at papassito's last week. I ate the seafood enchilada which was just a cheese enchilada with seafood on top. for 14.95. compare that to guadalajara's seafood enchilada with the seafood inside with a special avacado green sauce with the seafood cooked inside with real lump crabmeat on top for 13.95. chuy's has to be the most overrated tex mex in the history of the world, ate there 9 years ago and will never go back. el tiempo, ate at the one that was off i-10 before they had to close for freeway construction. decent, over priced. never been to lupe tortilla. original nifa's is good, but I'd still take guadalajara.
completely agree. if chuy's was in the suburbs, the inner-loopers would talk about how bad it is. it is marginal, average tex mex.
LOL, spot on. I’ve never understood the infatuation with Chuy’s. They just built one in Humble (OMG, that’s outside the Loop!!) and I was not impressed. The chicken was dry and the margaritas tasted watery. Only thing I liked was that white ranch sauce for the chips. That was pretty good, but not as good as Los Cucos green sauce.
I would go further about the sentiments about the fajitas at Pappasitos. I would say that anything off the grill is excellent, including the bacon wrapped shrimp and the mixed grill skewer. The tex mex food (tacos, enchiladas, etc) are mediocre at best for most of them, however they do have a couple tex mex things that are decent. Stick to grill items and it will be good. Guadalajara has been mentioned: that place rocks.
Alright. I'm going to try out this place and see what I think of it. Tell me what I should get there.
