It wasn't any video game, its HALO 3!!!!! But in all seriousness, the boy knew what he was doing, especially by saying "close your eyes". Its boils down to bad parenting, sad to see the mom had to get the end result.

Damn this is a very sad story. Also being 16 is no excuse for this. You know by the age of 10 that killing someone is wrong.

Parents have every right to tell their kids which games they can play and which games they cannot--even if they are misinformed about said game's contents.

So, good thing he had that gun to protect his family.

ONLY 16?? Didn't have a TRUE understanding of what he did?? Dude, when you're 16, you understand EVERYTHING. In two years, in some states ONE year, you're considered an adult. I think you're being WAY too lenient. Anger Management is all he needs? He's a freaking murderer....he tried to kill BOTH of his parents, and he succeeded in killing one of them. If he could do something like that over something so trivial, imagine what else he is capable of. I don't care if he'd been cooped up in the house for a year....there is absolutely NO excuse for what he did. That's fine and well that the father could forgive him so easily, but that's the father's job to forgive him....not the state's.

A 16 year old man should be able to play Halo.........Honestly.......

But shooting your parents? I think there is more here than on the surface....

What? I don't care if he had a "true understanding" of what was going to happen, all I know is by 16 you should know IT'S NOT RIGHT TO SHOOT PEOPLE IN THE HEAD. And if you don't, then you DEFINITELY need to play less Halo 3, not to mention like a lifetime in prison/therapy/straighjackets.

It's a testament to people being so wrapped up in themselves and their imaginary existence that they can't understand the basic tenet of civilization/life, much less love or strength of family.

It's also saying, hey, you're my son, and I can't f'in believe what you've done to all our lives, you psychotic loser.

And that's exactly why he should go there. You committ a crime you get punished, it's as simple as that.

Two things are going on here.

This kid has got major issues. Can someone say.. crazy???

Another thing, It says the dad is a minister. My bet is, the dad wasn't exactly the easiest dad to get along with; the same thing goes for his mom. A lot of preacher kids end up seriously messed up. This is a really sad situation.

Teen convicted of killing mother over video game
    By M.R. KROPKO – 4 hours ago

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — A judge Monday rejected the defense that a teenage boy opened fire on his family because he was addicted to video games, convicting him of wounding his clergyman father and killing his mother after they fought over a video game.

Lawyers for Daniel Petric, 17, didn't contest that the boy shot his parents in October 2007, but insisted his youth and video game addiction made him less responsible. But Common Pleas Judge James Burge disagreed and pointed to evidence the boy plotted the crime for weeks.

Petric was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges. He faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole. The judge didn't set a sentencing date.

Prosecutors said Petric planned to kill his parents because he was angry that his father would not allow him to play the video game "Halo 3," in which players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

During the trial, deputy prosecuting attorney Anthony Cillo described Petric as a cold, calculating killer who plotted to murder his parents, Mark and Susan Petric, and make it appear to be a murder-suicide by putting the gun in his father's hand.

Defense Attorney James Kersey has said that Petric was obsessed with the "Halo" series of video games, which he played 18 hours a day when he had the chance. Petric used his father's key to open a lockbox and remove a 9 mm handgun and the game.

Mark Petric, who is a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."

The father, who recovered from the shooting, testified that he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from a gunshot. His wife, Susan, 43, died of gunshot wound to the head.

Not really. If he were to get what he deserved, the judge would say to him, "Mr. Petric, please close your eyes. The bailiff has a surprise for you."

This is sick, I dont see how this is funny at all, when i was 16 i would not even hit my mom let alone shoot her in the head and i can't really say that if i was the father and he shot my wife i would be so understanding..it's not only sick but disturbing, it's like these ppl think they are playing a video game and it's not real people...you got to be kidding me, killing your mom bc she wont let you play a video game?? That boy needs to suffer the consequences, 16 is old enough to know right from wrong, if he was 3 or 4 years old maybe i could understand feeling sympathetic...but not six freakin teen...
