Fight! Fight! Fight! I've basically changed my tune on this. I'm basically for the ban now, though I really wish it would include provisions so that there would be one or two places in town where you could still have a beer and a smoke indoors. I guess when I want to do that I will go to the bar at Palace Lanes on Holcombe. It's in Bellaire, I can bowl if I feel like it and it's a good bar. The bartender there is hell of cool. The idea of patron enforcement is one that will ensure I won't be violating the ban. Right now there are places you can smoke and places you can't. If I go to a place where smoking is permitted -- having been banned from so many places where it isn't -- I am offended if I'm asked not to smoke. But if the deal is that it's not permitted, I'm not about to be a dick about it. Non-smokers will be going to these bars expecting a smoke free environment. Lighting up in the face of that is, to me, like lighting up in a nonsmoker's house or car. And I'm not comfortable doing that even with permission. I will make an exception when I am in a bar that has clearly decided to disregard the ban. There are several of these in Austin now. Last weekend I was there and walked into a good bar I will not name online to find plastic cups with a bit of water sprinkled all around the room. And at least five people were ashing in them. The same thing has happened in NY and CA and it will happen here too. p.s. I also prefer all redneck bars over all New York bars. p.p.s. I wouldn't be caught dead in $200 jeans.
I was in NY in January, and saw the same plastic cups. Probably a common thing. Most bartenders are smokers.
It happens in every city that's adopted the ban eventually. No ashtrays, prominently displayed No Smoking signs and plastic cups to smoke in. Personally I wish they'd just ban the damn things. That's apparently what it would take for me to quit. And I don't have any intention of buying cigarettes from a drug dealer.
Shut your mouth, punk. I know where you live! Seriously, when I smoked, I preferred going outside anyway. I smoked to relax and it was a lot easier to relax outside than it was inside. Just get away from all the morons for a few minutes and enjoy a cig. That was the whole point (for me). And like BJ said, I never felt right about smoking inside, even if it was allowed. I didn't even smoke in my own house.
finally, people can get drunk at a bar and damage their livers and drive home drunk before having unprotected sex with a stranger and they can do all of this without the pesky trouble of smoke! praise the lord. we will all benefit from this
well your right when you say drinking is harmfull but the difference is when I get drunk and take a cab home I only hurt myself, if I were to smoke I not only hurt myself but I hurt others and ruin their clothes
I'm a smoker and I've probably pissed you off at various venues around town, but I totally agree with you. Nobody that doesn't smoke should be forced to endure it.
you take a cab home...the other 500 people dont. and their cars pollute my lungs. see what im saying. its just a nitpicky thing to complain about. its not a big deal to ban smoking indoors, but the way they are going about it is just ridiculous. let the business decide and people will vote with their wallets. it shouldnt be forced or at least they could sell a "smoking" license and generate additional revenue. there is a better way to do it than just blindly banning it.
the point is, SECOND HAND SMOKE IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH. Non smokers are not gonna complain if people are allowed to smoke outside but why do we have to have out things smell and our lungs damaged because others have to have their bad habit.
again. if you are so concerned about what you inhale and you are at a place that allows smoking why would you stay there? leave. vote with your wallet. go to a place that doesnt allow smoking. a broad and blind smoking ban isnt the best option. even a reasonable anti-smoker should be able to see this.
FYI, Palace Lanes isn't in Bellaire. Bellaire stops at the train tracks. I believe Palace is in Southside.
