First off, I'm not suggesting that everyone (or anyone) should adhere to my diet. But if everyone wanted to, I would suggest we simply stop breeding those animals. There would be a hell of a lot less of them if we stopped purposefully making them.

As to whether it's better to give them life then take it rather than not giving them life at all, I would suggest employing the same standard you would to humans. I'd answer the question different ways depending on the circumstance. I am in favor of stem cell research because of the various predicted and actual benefits but I would not be in favor of breeding cognizant people in order to harvest organs or whatever. In that case I would not consider it better to give life and take it than to not give life at all.

Well, now that it is September 1st and the smoking ban is in effect.....

.....what's the over/under on Fatty getting into a fistfight, arrested, thrown in jail and on the news because he refused to put out his ciggie??

    Wagers, please.

    ;) :D :D :D

I'm going to hit up the smokiest bar I know (The Kentucky Club) and see if they abide by the new law.

I'm meeting up with him today. Not only did the smoking ban take effect, but it's a holiday weekend. Fatty is going to be in top form today for sure. I'll post pics! :D

I played the jam at Shakespeare's Pub last night.

Every time I'd ever been there, there was always a thick haze of ciggie smoke.

Last night was clear as a bell. A dozen people outside at any one time, smoking. Big no smoking sign behind the bar.

    It was nice.

    :)

Went clubbing this weekend and it was weird to come home and not smell like other peoples toxic waste.

Opinions of those who "go clubbing" don't count.

Yessir. The legendary Sunday night blues jam hosted by Spare Time Murray. I usually only do it when Mondays are a holiday because it makes the start of the work week kinda rough.

I wish they would ban Hookahs/Sheeshas or whatever those things are called, from anywhere, anytime. That stuff is so annoying.

We have our first club gig since the ban this weekend. The place we're playing at, the stage is above the bar, which means that normally, since smoke rises, we end up playing in a cloud of cigarette smoke for 4 hours.

The club sent us an email telling us to tell the people on our guestlist that the smoking ban WILL be enforced.

I can't wait to go home afterwards and not have my hair smell like smoke for 2 days for a change!

That's awesome. Right down the street from my home. Let me know next time you're headed that way.

Will do. Might be doing a full-blown band gig there later this year.

Yup. I'm surprised they decided to enforce it. I heard they could have classified themselves as a "cigar bar" and got around it, but decided not to.

I do see a lot of the old men trying to impress the younger women by smoking cigars. Perhaps the management was afraid of all the toupee's catching on fire. :D

FYI- As a partner in the Continental Club, I will announce that we are enforcing the smoking ban. This includes our sister bar, the Big Top, which is 3 doors down. The place smells better already and the smoke wreaks havoc on our sound system gear. Also FYI- we have a large patio in our backyard which is now home to smokers. We'll eventually be remodeling this area to make the patio even larger and plan on installing a full bar back there for busier nights as well. Our Continental Club in Austin has no deck but has enjoyed better employee health and a cleaner venue in general, plus lower A/C repair bills and a more reliable sound system since the smoking ban went into effect. I have no probelm with smokers and even have dated chain smoking chicks, but we are pleased with the ordinance. - David Beebe

Last weekend I was out in Chicago which doesn't have a smoking ban and it did seem strange and unpleasant to be in a bar that still had smoking. It also seemed like there were a few bars that had gone smoke free there too. I don't know if this was due to that there is a partial ban or that they had done it on their own, but there didn't seem to be problems with turnout at smoking or non-smoking bars.

That said I still don't support a blanket ban and I think that allowing bars to get smoking licenses is the way to go.

I was at Cahill's last night for steak night... it smelled so clean in there... a totally different experience.
