To follow up on Otto's point I'm also not aware of any biological condition that would cause you to stop digesting meat after awhile. I am lactose intolorant but that is due to genetics. If you were once able to eat meat you should be able to. That you get the runs or feel uncomfortable has to do with that you aren't accustomed to it and part of that might very well be due to that you are mentally unaccustomed to eating it and your body reacts accordingly. In fact your body requires certain proteins that cannot be solely derived from unprocessed plant sources so if your body naturally had the ability to stop digesting meat that would lead to a lot of problems. You would compare eating meat as something as evil as slavery and pedophilia?
no, but i'm willing to learn. sorry...i can't ever pass the opportunity to quote from Stripes. i watch sports on TV some, too.
just bile and insulin and enzymes produced by bacteria that digest the meat a certain way. your body doesn't use as much if you aren't eating meat so if you all of a sudden have a big steak it's going to have to adjust. and your colon isn't used to handling the waste products from digestion of meat since the bacteria in your colon that aided in digestion aren't there anymore...so you get diarhea if you don't ease into it. But that's my understanding, if you want more info, i'm sure you could do some research and enlighten us all.
I did a significant amount of research which was the point of the initial post of mine that you decided to take issue with. My research indicates that you are wrong and perhaps should do some research of your own before making unfounded claims.
easy dog, no need to be so hostile. it's quite common for people to have digestive issues with meat after a long period of not eating it. I have gone through this myself. Many people have.
yeah. your body may initially react oddly to it, but i dont think it will just not digest it. I think alot of it is also psychological. You slip a some small amount of beef/chicken/whatever in some regular food and the veggie eats it you wont see a reaction until you tell them meats in there. good point about the proteins. if vegans/vegetarians diets are properly supplemented then they actually can have some serious physical, and psychological problems.
When I've accidentally eaten meat in the past I've usually found out because I became ill. It's not psychosomatic as in most cases it was my screwed up stomach that alerted me to the fact. But I don't much care to argue this small area. I am vegan and I don't eat meat or dairy because I find it repulsive and unethical. The idea that I should concern myself equally with the hurt feelings of someone who cooked meat for me is ludicrous and offensive. And after a 20 year, ethical commitment, I never will consider someone's feelings equal to the commitment I've made. If someone finds that selfish or inconsiderate well the only thing I can think to say to that is f*ck off. Sishir: You asked if I equated meat eating to pedophilia or slavery. I do not equate them, no. But I do feel they are each examples of unethical and cruel behavior that are currently or will eventually be regarded by history as such. I expect it might take 100 years before that happens, but it will. Human society eventually rejects cruelty, no matter how long that takes. I'm fully confident it will happen eventually. And in that way yes I do compare past, cruel acts with current ones.
Email me through the board and we'll work out a time and place. Really looking forward to meeting you after all these years.
I would be interested in how you feel about the idea of 'cultured meat'? In the same way they talk about letting people regrow limbs from stem cells there is a persistent idea of growing 'vats' of animal meat in a nutrient bath. Is that offensive to you, if it doesn't come from a murdered aware being?
Never thought about it. It sounds gross, but it doesn't sound cruel. At any rate, I would not find it offensive. As evidenced by my previous posts, I also do not find meat eating offensive. I find it sad because I regard it to be cruel to animals, but I'm not offended by it. I think everybody should make their own choices that way. What I find offensive is someone telling me my choice is selfish or inconsiderate (in fact I find that totally outrageous) or that I should favor someone's hurt feelings over me not violating my personal ethics over maintaining those ethics. Eat all the meat you want. I won't ask you not to. In return, I would really appreciate the same respect.
I'm I the only one that thinks a thread title with the words "Tee Hee" is gay...maybe maybe no... There's a ban in Dallas for smoking and I like it...There's also a smoke free bar/club at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine and its nice to not come home smelling like smoke...However, in parts of Dallas county, its dry, which sux... I'm not an owner, so I don't know how much of drop in profit it is to businesses, to not have smokers, but I got to believe it levels out over the years... of course, to avoid it, you just go to Addision and its smoking galore...
i found this on a blog: that seems reasonable to me. If you all of a sudden eat a big steak after years of having limited protein intake, maybe you will get indigestion since you aren't producing enough protease.
I've never understood the "moral higher ground" of vegetarians. Animals do, in fact, need to be destroyed. Slaughterhouses are the polar opposite of not killing at all, but y'all do realize that animals must have population control. Can you imagine all of the rats, along with feral dogs, cats, and pigs that would immediately overpopulate without any control? Sad, but true. Also. And this is an honest question. How do vegetarians feel about killing bugs?
i never quite understood it either. But only the ones that rub your nose in it are the ones that bother me. bugs? plants? they were once alive...then violently ripped off of their mother to only be consumed while still "alive". barbaric i tell you
Actually, the reason I brought up "bugs" was that recently I found out that Lobsters and Crawfish are in the "bug" family. Technically, if you don't mind killing a cockroach, you shouldn't have any problem eating a lobster, at least, not morally.
As part of the culture I grew up under, I think the best way to explain it is that a lot of can extend the empathy they have for humans to animals. Animals do have personalities, and they also are capable of feeling pain, and are in some cases self-aware. They have emotions, and are intelligent enough to understand what death and fear is. It's known for instance that Cows are fully aware of when they are being brought in for slaughter and they panic greatly. So people feel a strong connection to animals, especially those that have personalities - that are human like. Squashing a bug is a lot different. And I think a lot of veggies feel it's unnecessary to kill animals for food. Or hunt them for sport. IN any case, I think meat tastes really good, and I don't want to give it up. But I'd prefer to buy meat that was prepared in a more humane way, if only to keep my conscious clear.
There are a lot of things you've never understood. I don't claim any higher ground on account of my diet (unless some war-loving, death-penalty supporting, bbq-eating person wants to assert they value life more than I do). I am doing what's right for me. I've never understood why that upsets some people so much. I don't claim any superiority for this either, but I really avoid killing bugs as well. I'll kill a mosquito if it's trying to bite me. In fact, I'll kill anything that's trying to bite me or that might be dangerous. I take roaches outside. But if I had a serious roach problem I'd have the house sprayed. I also wear leather. I'm not claiming to be better than anyone and I'm not claiming to be a purist. I just personally find it grotesque to put a carcass in my mouth, chew it into little pieces and swallow it. In fact, it's just about the most digusting thing I can think of. The rest of you can do whatever you want.
