I'm not clear on your meaning here. Are you saying I don't feel it's impolite and disrespectful to turn down gifts of meat? I do sort of feel that way. And I don't like to do it, but I do it in order not to eat a thing that I regard to be a murdered body. Politeness will never trump that for me. I would also turn down the gift of food from a cannibal, no matter how generous the spirit in which it was offered. Not trying to put too fine a point on this, but my issue was with you saying you ate as little meat "as possible." You don't. You favor the principle of politeness over whatever principle leads to limit the meat you eat. That's fine. But it's not as little as possible.
It's not politeness, it is a practice of non discrimination of the person offering food. That is just as important as not killing animals.
dude, you are really tripping. i defended pregnant women smoking and drinking heavily? what a stretch. and yes, i am both insane and employed by a tobacco company.
Oh, wow. Really? Jesus. What if they offered you a dead baby with an apple in his mouth? Would you be "discriminating" against them if you said no thanks? This is seriously the weirdest stuff I've ever seen you post. I have told you I feel bad when I turn down an offer of meat, but I seriously don't feel that bad. I mean, I don't like hurting people's feelings, but they are offering me a dead body and asking me to chew it up and swallow it. That's freaking gross. Not to mention disrespectful to me if they know my diet and considerably worse than disrepectful to the murdered animal. I don't know what's weirder or worse -- the fact that you equate a vegan turning down meat to be "discrimination" or the fact that you, as a person that has expressed an ethical problem with meat eating, consider turning down food to be as bad as killing an animal.

The simple fact is that our nation is at its highest Life Expectancy right now, and all of these folks lived where you could smoke in classrooms, shops, restaurants, etc. That you think an increasing life expectancy in the US is evidence of the benign nature of second smoke is scary. If you were capable of even the most basic logical or critical thinking, it would occur to you that factors like improved medical care/technology and diet over the 200+ years the US has been in existence would be responsible for this increase. Just one example- There was this minor medical advance called antibiotics that occurred during this period. LOL at MadMax's r****ded argument about not being a "blanket ban." People have been picking places to ban smoking for years now. Where, prey-tell, can you be allowed to smoke? As Max said a "blanket ban" means a ban everywhere. The ordinance does not ban smokiing everywhere. He is right. You are wrong. And look particularly dumb, when you are so clearly wrong yet refer to his position as "r****ded". If some of y'all want to live like the bubble-boy, bully for you. I'd rather my body be built up for some immunities just like my parents and grandparents. This one really takes the cake. Do you seriously believe that your body builds up an immunity to cigarette smoke in the way you develop immunity to disease through exposure? Please tell me you don't actually believe that.
Don't be a r****d, giff. If you're not careful, Fatty will find you at a bar, kick your ass and arrest you.
The funny thing is that if the cartoonist smoked I'm pretty sure he and Fatty would get along great. But, alas, he does not. And so Fatty will have to beat him up and arrest him.
It can be as bad. It can cause anguish and suffering for the offerer. The idea nothing new. 2500 years ago when Buddhists monks would go house to house to beg for food they would have to eat what was given to them, unless they thought it would hurt them etc. They went to both rich and poor houses. It was the practice of non discrimination. I try not contribute to killing in any way. What I eat is only a secondary issue. Did you serve meat as a waiter?
if you advocate parents being able to expose thier kids to cancer-causing cigarette smoke you might as well defend the other things. Anyway, why don't you just smoke it up buddy? Bump up your habit to a few packs a day and hope you find a smoke hole to suck in all that second hand smoke. Hope it does it for ya. And while you're at it, take your kids there with ya. Thank you for smoking.
2500 years ago it was a lot harder to be vegan than it is today. And I'm assuming those Buddhist monks indulged poverty as a moral imperative. Do you? If I were going door to door begging for food, I would be considerably less choosy. I certainly wouldn't expect to be greeted with vegan treats, by poor houses or rich ones. Is this how you get fed? And are you seriously accusing me of discriminating against people for turning down meat? This is going down a weird path. Yes, I served meat as a waiter. I even recommended it based on what I'd heard when patrons asked what was good. I've also dated and lived with meat eaters. If you're trying to knock me down based on some imagined holier than thou attituded you ascribe to me, it won't work. I'm not holier than you or anyone else. I'm not a crusader and I don't criticize other people's diets (except when someone like giddy comes around supporting elective wars, the death penalty and bbq and then tells me I'm not pro-life). I only took issue with your characterization of your diet as little meat as possible. When your standard for that is not offending your host, it is a very low standard. And it's nowhere near "as little as possible."
And if you defend parents letting their kids play in the sun, then you might as well defend the other things too.
The Texans offended the football gods by refusing their offering of VY as a #1 pick and look where it got them. Be careful whom you offend
i haven't really thought of it much, honestly. i'm honestly just excited that my wife, who has a reaction to second-hand smoke, won't have to breathe it when we go out together. and i'm excited that when i come home from being out with friends, i won't smell like an ashtray.
I think that's awesome. That's why I support the ban even though I hope that some small compromise will come about eventually. And I will only support that compromise if it is worked out in a way that would never compromise your ability to enjoy a smoke free environment whenever you go out.
cool as christmas. hey, are you living in houston?? as an aside...your position on the avoidance of eating meat challenges the hell out of me. i've had a few conversations with jeff on the subject, and his thoughts on it have done the same for me. i appreciate that.
I'm glad you feel challenged if you want to feel that way. I'm not at all convinced a vegan diet is especially healthy. I think a more perfect diet from that perspective would be vegan plus fish. I just can't bring myself to eat fish. At any rate, like I've said, everybody has to choose his own path that way. But yes I am living in Houston. And if you're interested maybe we could get together for some vegan food sometime. I'll go outside when I want to smoke.
