I'm even prejudiced against people who AREN'T legislators and call for the murder of "wetbacks." And I'm not talking about a radio show. I'm talking about a concert in which he riled up the crowd with talk of the Iraq war and then said another good use of guns would be to shoot wetbacks. It's in the first link I posted. Like I say, I'm a small, petty man. If you can get past this to admire his other qualities, more's the better. I guess I'm just not as enlightened as you. I think of him telling a crowd of fans to kill wetbacks and I just think, wow, what an *******.
I think one thing that we are all forgetting is that Ted Nugent can't be held responsible for his words. He's suffering from a bad case of Cat Scratch Fever.
Batman: I never said you were petty (just prejudiced) nor did I say that Nugent was admirable-- except perhaps in my initial post before the firestorm.
Yeah, I'm very prejudiced. I don't just hate all people who call for murdering people, I hate people who actually murder people too. I also hate people who murder animals. I'm also prejudiced towards wife beaters and husband beaters. And gay bashers too. And also I hate all the people who tell other people to bash or beat or kill people. I'm full of hate.
I haven't read any posts in this thread, but has anyone brought up the fact that Nugent's bass player is Mexican? To my knowledge he's never stormed off the stage in disgust.
I believe that SamFisher believes that Nugent hired the Mexican bass player so he could shout "wetback" whenever he wanted to! I've pointed that out. Are any of the members now or in the past of Ted's band Afro-Americans?
No, you believe that it excuses it. That pretty much speaks for itself. I'm glad you've finally found a fellow traveler, btw. It only took you five days and four pages to find somebody who agrees with you. Congratulations.
Oh, that's right, I'm in theater so anything I say can be chalked up to being dramatic. Nice one. Right out of Trader_Jorge's playbook. You called me prejudiced because I objected to Nugent telling his crowd it would be a good idea to kill wetbacks. That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever seen you post. Am I "prejudiced" against people who suggest killing "wetbacks?" Yes, I am. Guilty as charged. If that's being dramatic, I can't even imagine what kind of world you live in. And speaking of drama queens, aren't you the guy that used to have the signature "I'd rather be adopted than dead, but that's just me?" I mean, geez, you're not even in theater. What's your excuse?
I never said any such thing. Another mistake on your part. I'm not looking for approval. I'm too busy preserving The Constitution.
What do you say to Chris Rock or Richard Pryor? They say stuff like that all the time when they are performing (including being interviewed). I don't mean to insult you, Batman, I shouldn't have insulted you because I generally like you but you were going overboard with the comebacks. I quote: "I guess I'm just not as enlightened as you. I think of him telling a crowd of fans to kill wetbacks and I just think, wow, what an *******."
Sure, you never said it, you just happened to cite it at random for no apparent purpose in response to any condemnation of calling for the murder of wetbacks. Leaving aside the latest lie I guess you believe you can salvage some respect out of this thread if you pretend like you were defending the First Amendment, rather than just defending mean spirited ignorance. As long as it makes you feel good, I guess.
It was you who "lied" not me. I didn't say it, remember? There was an obvious reason for pointing out that Nugent works with a Mexican guitarist. It calls into question your charges of his patent racism. Why would that be tolerated by the fellow... or does he know something about TN that you don't know? Gosh, he only works and travels with him.... I'm no long-time fan of Ted Nugent. Why else would I defend him but from your ill-conceived attacks? Did I ever say I was defending mean-spirited ignorance or is that some lie that you kept repeating until you believed it? Where did I evidence such a tendency? Nowhere that's where. You'll not find a racist incident in my life. Three of my 8 college roommates for two years were from around Harlingen and were of Mexican heritage. We kidded around with each other all the time but it was friendly. I was one of the first big-city, suburban white guys they had ever met. They came to stay with my family on more than one occasion. They shared their home-made tortillas with me.
Putting aside your shameless backtracking and head in the sand obstinacy on your other "points" for a second... Would you have had the same exchange that you just had with me with these roomates of yours? Would you say to a roomful of a people "Lets go kill all the wetbacks" if they were around? Would you argue pigheadedly that that term is inoffensive because it can refer to Germans? Would you have tried to explain to them how people who use that term are misunderstood and how they should give Ted Nugent the benefit of the doubt? Yeah, I'm sure you would have.
Well it was either that or promoting the racist agenda that SamFisher assigned to me! Seriously, if you look at whatever I said, that's all I was doing. Nugent has a right to talk that way-- especially amongst his friends. That's about all I ever claimed.
I've backtracked nowhere. You're the First Amendment guru. It's not my fault if you don't recognize my line of argumentation. Look at everything I said and you will find a consistency. I notice you have not taken me up on my challenge. I'm sorry if I don't fit the mold that you had cast me in. That's your problem not mine. I didn't have that extreme an exchange with my old roommates-- but it was 30 years ago so I can't remember anything exactly that was said. I never said that anyone who uses the term is misunderstood. Obviously some people who use it, use it with a plainly racist intent. I only suggested that seemed to be untrue of Nugent-- after I had read up on it. See how you do that? You twist and extend everything I say until it suits your agenda for me... just like you do to/for Nugent.
Who said he didn't have a right to talk that way? Many have argued that he shouldn't, but no one, to my knowledge, has claimed that he couldn't. And he shouldn't.
I've been accused of complicit racism because I said he had a right to use that language. I've indicated that I think it is over-the-top but that's Ted Nugent apparently. I don't talk like that-- never have. SamFisher took me to task for defending Nugent. He likened me to any number of farm animals because I wouldn't just condemn Nugent at his and others' urging. I'm no more prone to speak like that than SF or BJ is, yet their rush to shut him up smacked of censorship to me. I took it for what it was to me: the ranting of a performer who likes to be provocative. It's pretty plain to me that all of these instances cited are extensions of Ted's act. Are they in bad taste? Probably. Let's lump him in with George Carlin and Chris Rock not David Duke. Look at the evidence of his life not a few words which explode from his mouth while performing.
