I can't stand Hannity but I would not label him as bad for the country. He is just an annoying ******* IMHO. As far as Koppel goes, he was probably one of the better members of the mainstream media.

The thing is, he can make all the points he makes and come across great if he would just stop criticizing the left for the exact same type of thing the right does. He goes on and on about the snowflakes, yet cries about people insulting Trump, Christmas, etc. He has no idea what he is talking about regarding unemployment. None. Ultimately, he chooses to be a dolt.

Exactly. Rush Limbaugh is popular b/c he's quite convincing in his arguments against the Left. Doesn't mean he's right- but if you didn't know any better, with the way he presents his arguments, you'd be easily persuaded that the Left is the #1 reason for any bad thing that has happened to this country. Many of his listeners take whatever he says as Gospel- it's what they don't hear that renders them ignorant.

Which is exactly Ted Koppel's point. The attraction of listeners who accept all of the highly partisan utterances as facts.

In fact, Limbaugh made famous the caller response "Dittos" and even "Mega-dittos"... a popularized code for "I agree with everything you said". No matter what, no matter (and probably especially) outrageous and offensive it may be (eg his attacks on past president's daughters and wives). Its funny... I first heard him in the 80's when he was a local radio talk host in Sacramento, CA. Back then he was as much known as a humorist, and I suspect long-time fans would still say he isn't to be taken 100% seriously. But most people unfortunately.

Hannity is a cheap copy, and without any pretense of intention of humor.

If only you had presented in your OP something balanced, it would have been a good topic. Instead, you presented a topic bashing Hannity using a video that decries our division because of exactly what Hannity does...AND what you did here. It doesn't get much more ironic.

I asked a simple question...WHY was Rush so popular from the very start? You respond with "Don't care why Limbaugh, or BOR or Levin or Hannity or Fox became popular."

Of course you aren't. We all might learn something from that.

But you were never about having a productive conversation here with those of an opposing viewpoint. You were never about examining those on the left who are also just as biased. You were simply interested in more mudslinging. Just admit you were all about bashing low hanging fruit like Hannity and we can all move on.

Gee, your expectation is that I hold myself to journalist principles that I would hold journalists to (and IMO, most people from Fox news are at best at the peripherals of journalism)? Well, here's a news flash... I am not a journalist. Just someone that posts to a political discussion forum. But quite complimented that you consider me a news source (though I wish I was paid as one).

But returning to the point of the thread, you talk to, but still misunderstand the point of the OP and the point that Ted Koppel was making... it is not just an expectation of right wing journalists but of all journalists. Hannity is an extreme example of someone in journalism (or at least, he is employed by Fox news), and fails America in that he constantly pushes out his extreme opinions as if they are facts. And often time... they aren't even close. Yet his audience consumes it as such, in part, because Fox news in large part blurs the lines between news and op-ed.

If you wish to have a discussion of why Fox News or Rush, or any of a number of other right wing outlets is popular among right wingers... create a thread and knock yourself out. This thread was about Koppel confronting Hannity as being bad for America, based on Koppel's belief he pushes his extreme opinions out there as facts when often, they are not. You can continue to be as butt-hurt as Hannity, and cry about the left being biased and "mean" to right wingers. Of course, Koppel long before disproved that in his own writings, but you can choose to ignore that to continue your partisan beliefs.

Is he REALLY butt hurt though? Or is this just faux outrage designed to get him more attention (i.e. more listeners)?

Personally I don't think Hannity believes half of what he says. He's not a stupid man. He's simply playing a character on the radio and giving his listeners (and detractors, for that matter) exactly what they want....and laughing all the way to the bank.

I used to listen to Limbaugh's radio show (and it certainly is/was a "show") starting back around the first Gulf War. Why? My philosophy is something like, "Know thy enemy." I want to know what's being said about all sides of an issue from all sides, pro, con, and indifferent. Rush used to be a very amusing source for hearing what one of the other side's had to say. He could be genuinely funny, laugh out loud funny, even as I was shaking my head at how wrong he was. Now? He's lost his sense of humor. He has become mean. Bitter and mean, and he's being as dishonest as Trump, his minions, and the people of Fox, some from Fox being worse than others. Hannity being an example of the worst, a talking absurdity that any honest news outlet would have fired long ago for blatant partisanship and outright lying.
