Team Fans Vs Player Fans Vs Bandwagon Fans I think one of the results/consequences of the Jordon era is that more and more younger fans are fans of players more than teams While I am fan of some players. . . I am a Rocket Fan 1st and foremosts That will probably never change of course there are seemingly a influx of fans of whoever is winning at the time seems like now more than ever . . .. . Watch how many Bucks Fans are about next year honestly This is what got me to thinking. . .someone pointed out how all the documentaries and stuff is about Giannis and none on the BUCKs or Bucks history etc I point out to friends. . . Most Golden State fans don't know who Run TMC was nor will they be Golden State fans in 5 yrs Am I wrong .. . is the same as it ever was? Rocket River
Back in the day you could only see local and nationally televised games so if you were a fan of someone on another team, you could probably only watch him a handful of times every year. It's easier to be a player only fan than ever before. I started as a Rockets fan because of Hakeem but I still remember when I became a die hard, all in Rockets fan. My friend was a Wizards fan and I was clowning him because his team sucked but then he just responded with "It's fine because every loss makes us more likely to get the top pick." That's when I realized that when you're a dedicated fan of the actual team, you can appreciate all the ups and downs and enjoy the process and not just the results. Haven't looked back since.
Disagree, started in the 80s with Magic and Bird. Pretty much, any documentary about those two in that era has mentioned it or alluded to how both players were very popular in opposing arenas, and even in non-NBA cities (people would drive across state-lines to watch the Celtics or Lakers play). There were Bird and Magic fans, all over the country, but they weren't necessarily fans of the Lakers nor the Celtics. I will say it profligated under him.
Did you clown him because the Wizards is an all time lame name, and the Bullets was pretty awesome? I still have a hard time with that change.
Player only fans have existed a long time. Fans used to drive hours to see Wilt play…. Later the same with Magic and Bird and Jordan… hell there were actually a lot of Iverson and T-Mac only fans…
really doesn't matter as long as brehs spend on the nba. all that matters. hell plenty young rox fans in high school don't know about the yao/mergady era.
Re-expanding the discussion to include “bandwagoner fans”, per thread title Is this a sign of a bandwagoner ... only goes to games when it’s socially acceptable Need a ruling @DreamShook vvv
I would call myself a supporter or sympathizer, not a fanatic by any means. I like the transformation, transformed man. The subtlety that is life.
I'm a Rockets fan first like some on this board but I think most of us are not afraid to criticize the organization or its personnel. We shouldn't be afraid, especially since it is our money making up their revenue. Players only fans aren't bad either... they just tend to be extremely bias in their critiques. Now Lin Only Fans. Oof. That is an era of Clutchfans that I will never miss. Some of those dildos actually treated him like he was the second or first coming of the messiah. Some literally acted like he was the only player of Asian descent that we ever had on this franchise. LOF are definitely a category of its own.
If a Hartenstein Only Fan changes to Christopher Only Fan because the latter is now on the Rockets, is he a bandwagon player team fan? @Williamson
Rockets fan. Don't mind the bandwagoners, the more the merrier.....understand player fans, but not over team. DD
