I played sports as young as 5 years old. Scores were always kept. The lessons I learned in losing were more important than those in winning. As a coach, a parent, or any other influence this opportunity for children is invaluable. The lessons to learn from losing help you to succeed the next time. This is invariably true in everything you do in life.

We get it. You've said it six times in this thread. And you will probably say it 10 more times. This is your second thread on this subject.

This is why arguing with DD is like talking to a brick wall. You get no substance in return.

I do give you minor props for finally learning how to see other people's view points or possibly see where they are coming from.

Someone please rep this post for my hard work.

Did you expect to sway him otherwise? I can understand a comment on arguing with DD in most cases, but in this case HE started the poll and obviously stated his opinion strongly to begin with. If he posts his opinion 20 more times in the same thread, how is this surprising? I didn't really see this as starting an argument but rather asking others opinions.

    "Hey do you like basketball?"

    "Yeah I love basketball."

"Me too, I think it's the best!"

    "Hey I like basketball too!"

"Cool, yeah basketball is definitely great."

"I'm not really a fan of basketball."

"Well basketball is one of the greatest sports though..."

After going to countless Oak Hill girls softball games to root for my daughter and her team, I can assure everyone that, yes, scores are still kept. Parents also still yell at idiot refs. I can testify. ;)

I'm ambivalent either way, and this seems like some kind of straw man argument. (Still haven't seen or heard real-life examples of not keeping score). But I always thought juice boxes, the "goo-game" handshake and naturally short attention spans were good enough hedges against the emotional trauma of losing. Maybe, for academic or social class reasons, some of these parents don't want their kids caring too much about competitive team sports. Or maybe it's a way of keeping girls involved and engaged in sports without having to deal with competition.

I guess in the end the question is: Is *everything* a competition? should it be?

To have fun. It could happen!!!

So when you learned to swim was it part of making a swim team? Why swim if you do not want to win?
