Has it been posted what grade this is in yet? Seems like an elementary question, but then the whole saw thing makes it seem like it would be for older students. Still, LOL for the thread turning it into a warped math competition sort of question.
The teacher's reasoning doesn't make sense. 10=2 15=3 20=4 Does that mean it takes 5 minutes to cut a whole piece of wood into a whole piece of wood? But, I'm pretty sure the teacher was looking in the official teacher's aid textbook when grading the test/homework. If we're going to be angry at someone, it should be those capitalist pigs at McGraw-Hill who're creating these flaw questions/answers.
what if she used an electric saw, probably she would cut it faster, so she can cut into 3 pieces, in less than 10 mins. just kidding. what if she lied, or what if she didnt have a clock, how she would know it take her 10 mins to do the first cut. then the beat la and reeko (wrong) answer could make sense.
I'm surprised that more people are commenting about the answer and not about the fact that this is a second grade level question...
What really happened was that she sawed the first cut for 10 mins, half way through the second cut, Mary said, "**** THIS!" and karate chopped that mofo. 15 minutes
I had fun with this thread. Here's a secret: My initial answer was 20 minutes. I can see how 15 would be right considering the poor wording of the question and some Geometric properties.
My initial answer...before I made that post...before I read the teachers response... No one's backtracking. I just think it's funny that I could see how both answers were right.
Here's the thing...the answer is 20. I can see how 15 could be right answer if I changed the question around in my mind. For that matter, I can also understand how 25, 45, and 60 could be answers. Given this question, as stated, there is 1 correct answer...not 2 or more correct answers.
Yeah, but by your logic (which i was going to offer, too) s/he still fails by saying "20min = 4." No it doesn't. 4 pieces could be done in nearly 15 mins by Rocket River's logic. Depends how small of a sliver you cut on your second cut. Thin enough, and your 3rd cut could take just a split second.
What amazes me almost as much as BEAT LA's unbelievable stupidity and the fact that so many people don't get a 2nd grade math question is the amount of people who chime in with something that has already been said...once, twice or even three times...obviously not having read the thread.
oh, shut up. haha. I honestly had no idea this was 20 pages long. After hitting submit, I immediately said, crap, i bet what i just said has been said several times. I'm a wee bit rusty.
