The best part of this analogy is the use of a fictional character.

That's what I thought b4 I saw the vid. Anderson gave him every opportunity to distance himself from his statement that the Waffen-SS were valiant men, or condemn the Waffen-SS, but the dude couldn't. Not enough to say he's definitely a Nazi sympathizer... but it looks highly probable to me.

Several excellent comments, Jackie. While I have nothing against reenactments, per se, having watched a couple of medieval ones that were great fun, this cat seems to be a bit "off." It wouldn't be hard to believe that his participation runs a bit deeper than most and not in a good way.

Last time I checked, Captain Hook was fictional. By contrast, the Nazis were very, very real.

I understand your point, but a very poor analogy.

Then you didn't get the point. People on this thread seem to think an actor is what they portray, thus if Obama played Cpt. Hook he must be Cpt. Hook. It has no relevance to the point if the character they play is fictional or not. It would be like saying it is a bad analogy cause Cpt. Hook used a sword and Nazis use guns.

Ah great analogy. Thanks! Lets explore your cute little analogy.

If Obama played in a school play once ...fine.

If Obama setup a website to discuss the virtues of pirates ....uh oh.
If Obama regularly met up with his pals and dressed up like pirates ...uh oh.
If Obama toured the country putting on plays portraying that pirtates are just "misunderstood" ...uh oh.

You folks that keep comparing this guy to actors are being obtuse.

And if he moves to Mexico, creates a turtle warehouse and kidnaps kids and their uncles, then we have real trouble.

SJC, I have actually really changed my mind as this thread evolves. Here's why.

    (1) Seeing the group's site.
    (2) Seeing Iott interviewed and taking zero steps to distance himself from truly admiring the human vermin known as SS.
    (3) tallanvor's posts attempting to defend the dude make it worse and worse.
    (4) the fact that, well... hating jews, gays and people with dark skin does seem to have some resonance here and there in modern american politics, sadly.

Iott's attempts to make this all about fighting communism are just pathetic.

Finally, I've avoided more general thoughts about dressing up to reenact things out of respect for all the other posters. I'm pretty sure we have civil war buffs, society for creative anachronism members (i.e. that's what moes's neckbeard was really about), and, obviously, one out-of-the-closet furry.

    Nazi? Not necessarily.

Dangerously Fascist-leaning teabag ideology resulting in admiration of Nazi history? Yes

As has been pointed out, The group the politician enjoys re-creating were not regular German soldiers. They were avid Nazis. The civil war reenactor is probably just playing a regular person unless their contribution to the reeactment is to dress up as the Klan or another vigilante group that lynched innocent blacks.

Look...let's put this thread to an end.

With that picture...of him in a Nazi uniform...embracing other folks in Nazi uniforms....

He may or may not be a Nazi sympathizer. It's possible he's a Nazi Zombie.

    But what he is...with 100.1% certainty...is a humongous douchecanoe.

Great point. An actor might play many different roles with none of them having much to do with what the actor is personally like or where his sympathies are. For instance Keifer Sutherland is most associated with Jack Bauer from 24 but his own politics are opposed to the type of things that Jack Bauer does.

In the case of Iott though he goes beyond just playing a role but is spending his own time and money on his Nazi reenactment. This isn't a job to him but a pastime that he of his own accord and cost is doing.

All of that said I don't know enough about him to condemn him for this but if I was a voter in his district it would raise some questions about what type of person he is.

I had a friend in Houston that used to do this, and I joined a couple of them for fun.

Sort of like Pre-paintball war play.
