This isn't true, most fans are UT nut riders that never even went to a University of anything. I cheer for UT when they are doing good and like to see all Texas schools (excluding SFA and Sw. TX. St.) But I cannot stand UT fans that didn't even go to UT that hate aTm. One of my best friends who never went to any college claims UT and speaks like, "we gotta get this win, we gotta do this or that, beat aTm" He's talking about UT, I'm lookin at him like really?! You are from Willowood in Houston and never went to UT yet refer to thim as WE!?!? That "we" should be reserved for UH since you live in Houston and didn't attend anywhere but he went with the winner, just like most fans do. If you didn't attend UT, then there should be no reason to hate on another fellow Texas school like that. Notice my name, get why I don't like SFA and Sw. TX. St?! Sam and UH are my schools for life, I never attended UH though, which means I also cheer on Rice, I love their baseball program! Cause not only is it a Texas school but its a Htown school at that. Point is, TCU has been good now for a few years and has a huge opportunity to finish the season out with a BCS Bowl win, get lucky and they could be playing for the national championship! TCU's fan base will grow around the DFW area because they are good and hopefully steal away some of the non attending college fans (which are many) from UT and aTm by playing against some great Universities of the Big East. I can only wish for this to happen to UH.
Not so fast. UH has proven itself in the last 5 years to be on par with UT and A&M in its tv ratings in Houston. (Especially when not playing bum-f**k state at midnight on a thursday) The times, they are a'changin.
So let me get this straight... because you live in a certain part of Texas, you should only have the right to cheer for the team nearest you? What the **** kind of logic is that? I think the "hate" is more rivalry based... because of how much a game means between A&M and Texas and the bragging rights. I don't see how it's any different from professional sports. That's like telling someone who lives in New Orleans that they can't be a Rockets fan because they live in New Orleans and already have a team. I don't understand that logic whatsoever... there's nothing you can say that would make that justifiable. Maybe if he was representing Texas as an alma-mater or something with the school in terms or pride, I could see how you could question him... but rooting for the sports team of a college... I don't see how there's anything wrong with that. If Texas wasn't a successful program and it had "t-shirt fans", I don't think anyone would be using that as an insult. There are plenty of college teams for all different kinds of sports that have fans from other cities (whether they went to community college, or another college, or whatever).
All I see is that you have 7,800 posts and only been a member since 2009. Get a life! I never said he had to cheer for any school, I said its not cool to not have ever attended that University but yet lay claim to hating aTm. Its ridiculous! Again I cheer for UT when they have shots at titles too. I'm all about the state of Texas when it comes to college yet I still hold my "never graguate" values by hating on SFgAy and Sw. TX. St. Didn't even bring up professional sports because this is all about college and students! Big difference! I'd never cheer on the Spurs or Mavs but those are grown men not students that are mainly from my state! Now go try to get a girlfriend, your mommy thinks you post too much
College sports have become mainstream, so why can't a casual fan who may not have gone to college root for a team that's good, like the longhorns or the gators or the trojans? Do you expect them to root for the Sam Houston State University team because they live near Huntsville?
I don't think they will be for long. With Coach Christian they have been improving every year and recruiting has been much better. With Texas being the top state for recruits a recruit can stay in Texas while playing in the best (for the past few years) basketball conference which will be a huge draw. Also, TCU will put large sums of money into the basketball facilities and program shortly.
I haven't once said they can't be, just that they should be. Remember this arguement is about TCU's popularity over the UT/aTm's hell ou can even throw OU in that mix. That since they have become a very good team lately and has a shot at being National Champs they will get more local fans that never attended any university. Winning will do that. Because I said they should be(not have to be) more local with their fanhood toward colleges doesn't mean that every person that lives around Huntsville has to cheer for only the Bearkats. They should be UT/aTm/TTech and this year TCU. Having lived around there for 4 years I'll tell you I met more than a few residents that did not go to college and they supported Sam while also cheering for the "mainstream' team which at the time was UT. I happily cheer on smaller schools around the area. TSU has a chance at the SWAC title and I'll be watching every second. If HBU does well, awesome, they play D1 basketball and baseball. St. Thomas and UH-Victoria play NAIA, I wish them well. Blinn and San Jac in the NJCAA also. But if any of these teams play Sam or UH I cheer for my teams. I just hate that Sam/UH play each other twice this year! I just don't have fun at those games either way. I know I'm beating a dead horse but thats just me, I actually say things in my various posts throughout the years. Some ppl on here are really just twitting their posts counts up!
The fact is, TCU's fan base will grow with this move if they continue winning. It already has changed in the Fort Worth area. When I was there, there wasn't much of a fan base from the city....(outside of the university). Now, the down town has been lit up purple, larger crowds. On top of it, TCU is getting a nice face lift on their stadium just in time for the Big East games. Can't wait! I root for 3 school basically. 2 of which I don't live near, used to live by them. And the last of which I live / attend right now. TCU TxA&M SFA
Stupid logic because I love most all the schools in my state and don't like t-shirt fans that take rivalries against other Texas schools too serious. You know, it is stupid logic but you said I couldn't say anything to make it justifiable and I did. I hope the best to all schools but the two I've said before. Sorry if its embarrassing to love my state and still hold my actual Universities rivalries that I attended true. That's how I'm gonna play it though! Stupid logic or not. This year: Go TSU against Alabama St. SWAC Title Go SMU against UCF Conf. USA Title Go TCU for hopefully National Title if not BCS Bowl! SFA- Sounthland Champs hope they lose in D1AA playoffs! Last Year: Prarie View- SWAC champs Blinn- NJCAA National champs Houston- runner up to East Carolina in title game UT- won Big 12 and runner up to National title This happens almost every year! Are you starting to get why I cheer this way? I hope UT gets back up there one day too, girls love it when UT's winning titles! Hope your experiencing all the fun of college and not on here too much! Eat 'em Kats and Coogs!!!
I never said it was wrong for you not to have anything against a rivalry or that it'd be stupid if you did root for everyone in Texas. I get that, you're a fan of every school in the state. The point I'm trying to make is that if you're a fan of a team, how does it make it wrong for you to root against an opposing rival? That really doesn't make any sense to me. By that logic, you're pretty much implying that t-shirt fans should root for every team including their rivals. How does that even make you a fan? And to make things clear, I'm not hating on any rivals schools, but I'm not sure how I would ever root for another team unless it was to the benefit of my favorite team. And yes, you can compare it to professional sports in the sense that you're rooting for a SPORTS TEAM, not the school. I'm a Rockets fan, but there's no way in hell I would root for the Mavs just because I live in the state of Texas. I can see where you're coming from, but do you see where I'm coming from? A die-hard fan of one team isn't going to root for a rival... and just to make that clear once again, not hating on that team, just not rooting for em.
How sweet it is! Considering they were 0-11 two seasons ago. 03:30 PM ESPN3 FOOTBALL NCAAF Villanova vs. Stephen F. Austin (Second Round)
The only thing I can assume he means is that it's dumb when people go to insulting a school / program. That goes beyond just rooting against the rival of the school you follow etc. I don't know. Honestly, I couldn't find much logic in his take with rooting for schools. Like you said. Rooting against a rival...is understandable. I'll agree that I hate people who act as sheep and insult a program etc. As much as I might dislike one school over another because of rivalry. I won't go as far as (don't think I ever have...could be wrong. ) making fun of the student body and university. Most of the rivals are strong institutions, with a very in-depth/rich history.
Yeah, I don't see how it would be in my right to around and insult a rival. I joke around occasionally, but for the most part, I have respect for all teams in the NCAA.
I have a real hard time believing this. I know its a small sample size but when I'm out watching the games at various places around town very rarely is there anybody watching UH. Its UT,aTM,Tech,TCU,LSU and whatever random big game is on. It will always be that way unless UH lands in a big conference some how. The Tech/UH game had a buzz around the city but other than that nothing. this is a longhorn city followed by the other texas schools in big conferences...I just refuse to beleive a random UH CUSA game will out draw a random TExas Big 12 game.
