I believe the actual claim they make is "#1 Rated sitcom in cable TV history," which, if true, is worth something...
well i feel remorse for the show...im very tempted to vote yes, i love it. even though ive never seen in in my life im more annoyed with the bill edvall show commercials.
The promos are so annoying that I never bothered to watch. I have found other black comedies hilarious (Fresh Prince, Steve Harvey Show, Wayans Bros)
I went to diaries of a mad black woman with some black guys. they all thought it was great, I thought it was the dumbest movie i had ever wasted my time watching in a theater
The only funny thing about that show is the fact that my wife and I laugh every time we see the commercial while thinking out-loud, "Who in the hell would watch this stuff...and why?" Never seen one minute of the show and have no urge to do so whatsoever...
Wow, if you actually thought the Steve Harvey show was funny, I am sure you would think that House of Payne is a riot. I've never seen it but I assume it sucks.

yeah, the claim is "cable sitcom" just like tnt claims "The Closer" is the number one cable series of all time. i've never seen a tyler perry movie or watched "house of payne". the commercials look terrible.
Not only are the commercials unappealing to me.... Aside from the TV show, I've never even heard of Tyler Perry or any of the movies he's worked on. I had to look him up on IMDB. Never heard of "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" Never heard of "Madea's Family Reunion" Never heard of "Why Did I Get Married?" .. just never heard of Tyler Perry. Is this because I'm white? Do most black people know who he is and know his films, while white people don't? Or do I just live in a cave?
Tyler Perry has nailed a niche. He makes movies for the "Black Church-going Crowd", and they eat it up, with some crossover from other Christians. I personally think they are hilarious, but I've never seen his TV show.
Yeah, I didn't get why they use Tyler Perry's name so often in ads for his projects. I'd never heard of him before so it certainly didn't make it a selling point to me. Not to mention, judging from the titles of his previous stuff, it's more chick flick territory. But I finally decided to wiki him. He's actually got a very impressive biography (grew up w/ abusive father, toiled around w/ regular jobs, got inspired by an episode of Oprah, eventually saved up money to put on his own play, didn't succeed for awhile but then finally took off, and parlayed it into his own mini-empire). Pretty commendable stuff. Still won't watch any of his shows or movies though.
his movies are immensely popular in areas with large african american populations. I have worked at a theater and can tell you he is a huge box office draw. The numbers might not be impressive if you look at it from a standpoint of the totals in comparison to mass release movies, but when you look at the average he makes per theater that his movies are released to, it's huge.
He spent $10mil on his first two movies and made $110mil in the box office. Then TBS signed him up for $200mil deal over 6 years or something and that's why they feel the need to plaster his name all over the place.
tyler perry's a smart guy actually. make comedies that require pennies (relatively speaking) to produce while all the numbnuts pay top dollar to watch it.
Why do you assume the Steve Harvey show sucks, especially since you've never watched it? I hate House of Payne with a passion but the Steve Harvey show is incredibly silly and fun. It's not exactly sharp humor, but it's funny stuff.
NO WAY!?!?!?! REALLY!?!?!? I thought MEXICANS were his biggest draw! I kid. I just don't understand what the deal is with ETHNICALLY-oriented shows. He says his shows are "about what happens in the REAL WORLD of families", but he means to say that his shows are "what we need to show the U.S. about what is OK to stereotype about a black household without upsetting a bunch of people who will riot because I am black and I can do it, and you can't, whitey." I am not entirely convinced that this should be discussed, but this is what's wrong with the U.S. and A. We just keep turning a blind eye to people who continuously do stereotypical stuff, and it's not frowned upon, unless it's someone of a different race. He can't do a COSBY SHOW where people of ALL races can identify with parenting... he has to do a show where the dad is LOUD, OBNOXIOUS, SPEAKS his "MIND", and does stereotypical black stuff. That ain't right. Make the entire country laugh, not just a section. Anyway... I am just blabbering about nothing. Maybe he should do a show about NOTHING... yeah, that would be FUNNY. I bet you black folks don't find SEINFELD funny.
that's an interesting way to look at it. I do think you nailed his market nicely. he certainly should be commended for his hard work and success.
