I'm not going by numbers, I'm going by what I've seen when I watch him play. I watched quite a few Warriors game when Azubuike was playing for them. Ellis is a streaky outside shooter... which is probably why he has such a lower ts% - and whoever posted the picture above with the hot zones is right... he gets a lot of layups. If you take out the close to the rim shots... he's 301/805 or 37% That's not a great jumpshooter.
The problem with this team isn't lack of effort on defense. The problem is a coaching staff that is getting exposed for being poor defensively. The holdovers from the Van Gundy era are mostly gone and so is the Van Gundy philosophy. Unless this team gets itself 2-3 "self starters" on defense you can kiss contending status goodbye no matter how much they score each night. Or you could get a new coach but I don't think that will become a subject within the organization until next season.
what's your definition of trying? Just thinking you are trying, or actually moving? Was brooks trying when he was frozen to the ground and let blake shoot those 3s? You're quickly becoming the worst poster on this board. Very quickly. At least other guys make an effort to discuss issues, your posts are just all over the place and/or mini-rants.
