I don't see any reason to think she can't be successful long term. She isn't playing to the pop crowd, she's playing to the country music crowd. And she's not the next big thing, she IS the big thing. She's right there with Carrie Underwood.
It's possible but look at Shania Twain. She had that huge album, "Come On Over", released the follow-up a couple of years later and really hasn't done anything since. Granted, some of that is due to family reasons but I am just saying that history hasn't been kind to pop/country stars when it comes to staying power unless you are a Madonna or Michael Jackson, for example.
Shania stopped producing records. But you are right, history generally isn't kind to ANY music stars as time goes by. That said, country music has a lot of musicians with staying power in country music. I don't see any reason to think Taylor Swift can't have a good career in country music. If she makes the mistake of trying to go straight pop, I agree with you that she will fizzle out as pop music tastes change with the wind.
she has TWO BACK TO BACK SOLD OUT shows at the Toyota Center in May. She must be doing something right. oh and yes, i knew of her way before the kanye thing. I'm not a big fan of her music but i did like her first album much more than this one.
Well I knew she had those songs but it's not like she's always on my mind or anything. It's not a topic that gets reminded often prior to Kayne
Lavigne had what? 1 or 2 hit songs. Every song on Swift's latest album is a hit. She is probably the most popular female singer in America right now and has been for a year or so
OMG stop PICKING on Taylor She wuz so diserving of her award an then Kanye came in an wuz so MEAN 2 her.. Oooh and she's so...endearing...We must all be collective big brother to her, and protect her... (someone brought up Taylor Swift last month in a country music thread. indirect response to that weeks later) Well someone had to do it...Taylor Swift is a talent and really happy for her and everything. "I'm let you finish, but" Tammy Wynette is the best blonde country singer of ALL TIME
gotcha, at least it makes more sense now when i read what you wrote. But i gotta go with some of the things written above. Shania Twain I always thought was more overproduced and more about her looks than anything else when she did concerts. She lip-synched on multiple occasions, among other things. And I really was never a fan of her crossover stuff personally--it was very stupid pop--just add some rhythm and a decent melody and nothing else mattered. I really see no reason why Taylor Swift can't be successful going forward. As someone else said, Avril Lavigne had a couple of stupid songs that were only successful in the sub-16 crowd, and she really only had 2 or 3 other successful songs over the course of 3 or 4 albums or so. Taylor Swift has had a couple of songs closer to the "stupid" category also, but her other stuff has done well and is much further from the formulaic pop stuff that's typically put out. It probably helps that she doesn't seem like an idiot (though I really have nothing to base that on), so I'd like to think her music and songwriting will improve as she matures
I knew of Taylor Swift when I heard Teardrop on my Guitar. But never knew she was so big until the Kanye incident.
Think I first heard of her about a year or so ago. Didn't really pay much attention to her though (just another country/pop artist in my mind), and didn't realize she was so popular. Kanye incident probably did help me realize that. Can't say I really care for her music, and I definitely gave it a listen since I was trying to figure out why she was so popular. OK/Good, but nothing great IMO. But at least it seems like she does have some musical talent (songwriting, can actually play music at least somewhat, can sing, etc.), which is always nice. She seems like a nice person with a sense of humor too, although that doesn't really mean much in producing good music (guess it helps create a good role model though). I'll admit that I made some connections to Avril as well, although that may have more to do with her music videos, some of which seem like a cross between Avril's older videos and teen movies from the 90s. Might be why I ignored Taylor Swift previously since her videos and lyrics seem a bit generic, but as mentioned, maybe that's due to her age. Spoiler Wait a minute...this isn't the Video Game Music thread. Though I did read rumors that Square-Enix would license You Belong With Me for the US release of Versus 13.
