bnb -- you're absolutely right...the anti-image crowd can be just as idol worshipping as the bubble gum crowd! they're just worshipping a different image...on an appeal for a lack thereof. my wife says John Mayer should give me hope on this front...she finds him to be less than physically attractive...but she really loves his music.
For what it's worth, this is the first time I've ever actually seen a picture of the members of TATU. They play their music all the time on U-Pop, (an XM radio station) and I've always thought that there songs were pretty catchy and likeable. So for me at least, the fact that they're psuedo-lesbians or whatever had nothing to do with me liking their songs.
[rant]They're not a band and it's not "their music". Hell, I don't even consider it music. They are models. Some slick producer turned them into "singers" through the magic of the studio for the sole purpose of making as much money as possible in a short amount of time. Get in, cash in, get out. I mean, doesn't this whole scenario sound a bit familiar?..... [/rant]
Ewww......that is wrong. I hate you bastards brought up Milli Vanilli, now I can't get that damned "Girl You Know It's True" song out of my head. Seriously, video did kill a lot of careers because there were some ugly folks who did fine in the 70's but when videos came along, they were doomed, like: Christopher Cross, the guy went from being the biggest selling artist around to doing state fairs. Billy Squier, his attempt at a cool video for "Rock Me Tonite" was one of the most scary moments ever on MTV. I still have nightmares about him prancing around in his sister's workout clothes in that video. And as a kid, you thought Thriller was scary! But it did make a lot of people bigger than they ever could have been otherwise: Duran-Duran Culture Club Tina Turner (made her comeback possible, plus the great songcrafting skills of Mark Knoffler of the Dire Straits) Cindy Laupher Flock of Seagulls All of the Seattle bands that reside in the either 1. died of a heroin overdose 2. or reside in the where-are-they-now file because they refused to do anymore videos because they hated making money or 3. are broken up like Soundgarden. Good looks have never hurt, but look at SVR. He was ugly as sin, but his talent transcended the visual appeal factor. It has always played a role in pop music and always will, sorry to say.
Right. I didn't know until years later. Her name was Martha Wash, and she had a "one-hit wonder" in the 70's with this other chick as "The Weather Girls". They sang "It's Raining Men" (great song by the way ). Part of the image/video/whatever for that song was that these ladies, who were quite "plus-size", had all kinds of good-looking men falling all over them. (Hey, large men have it the other way around in their videos all the time.) C&C decided they wanted to use Martha's vocal talents, but I guess a large lady with a healthy voice wasn't what they wanted in the video. So, every time you heard "Everybody dance now", it was not coming from that skinny chick you saw. And they were featuring the model, putting her name up there, just like she was supposed to be the singer. Martha sued - don't know what happened, but I can't blame her. She went on talk shows and proved that she was the one who could belt out the music. But, dance acts like C&C don't have to tour and prove where their music comes from. Even if they had to, technology does wonders these days. See Milli Vanilli. Even after they were exposed, guess what: everybody wanted to know what happened to Rob and Fab. The press followed them. They were only the faces/bodies of Milli Vanilli. No one ever cared about the guys who sang the songs. I don't even know their names. And don't even get me started on Faith and Shania, mentioned above; I'm sure a lot of their popularity is due to looks (especially Shania). Their music is not that interesting. And all those young female pop singers whose actual voices get lost in all the background vocals. I get the feeling that the studio singers backing them up carry most of the tune, while the young "artist" carries most of the image. There is a place for visual art. There are places where art and music, theatre, etc. are combined. There should also be a place for music to stand alone. I still believe that the record-buying public is going to get tired of the mediocre, studio-fueled garbage that they've been fed for too long; most of us would already probably make vastly different choices if we just had more samples of different musical acts out there to listen to. (and I don't want this to get lost in the middle of my long rant: Congratulations MadMax on #10000! )
The music is very much not interesting, but credit where credit is due. I think they both have nice voices. I actually watched a Shania Twain TV special (just to see her boobies) one time and was a little surprised that she was actually singing live. Quite well, I might add even though the songs were crap. I also heard Faith sing the National Anthem and clearly she can sing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to run out and buy any of their music. I just wouldn't put them in the same catagory as these tatu bimbos. EDIT: Congrats, MM! You should really get a life!
a. DAYUM, MadMax has 10000! for some reason i thought you were in the 7's or 8's. how many people are even in the 10k club right now? jeff, heyp, rm95? b. thank you Jeff. image/looks have always mattered. i could be mistaken, but i don't think 40 year old serious music critics were doing all that screaming the first time the beatles were on ed sullivan. rock bands have always done the break all your instruments on stage, party like crazy to build up an image, do whatever to make yourself cool/popular thing. motown trained their artists on how to look and act at all times. image is important and always will be. c. shania twain? are you people crazy. she, like garth brooks, moved country away from country and brought it to the masses and crossed pop and country about as well as it can be done. she had a big album, an 11x platinum album, Come on Over is the 8th biggest album ever, and her last album was #1 at one point. being good-looking doesn't do that and keep you on top for a decade, no way, no how. i sure don't listen to Come on Over thinking she's so hot, that's why i like this album. being hot may help (that don't impress me much was a fun video to watch), but lets not get crazy on how much image helps. d. you accidentally d/l in my head. hmmmmmmmmm. e. a TATU thread now? wtf!
It showed us that the MUSIC DID NOT MATTER If it did. . . the two 'ugly' guys that actually sung the sonds would have gotten the grammies. . . but u notice they DID NOT GET THEM EITHER and I thought that the music is what won . . . .. Rocket River
FD, you're starting a thread on TATU proves that you are one of the most hard-up posters on this BBS, next to the late, great YoYao!!!
