I think a late 1st is roughly the same value as Four 2nds. Also, I'll assume the pick comes with contracts roughly equal to Tate's so there's no added risk of a longer contract player or added benefit of a smaller contract. My take: Late 1st/Four 2nds = an expected rotation player on a contender. Early 2nd = an nba player that may or may not work out for your team Two 2nd = a solid nba player that may not make a rotation but can provide depth Three 2nd = an expected rotation player on many teams. Or a rotation player on a contender that has some negatives like Adams not being able to play this season. I think Tate is a Two or Three 2nd round player depending on the team. Let's say we can get those two or three 2nds. What would we do with that? If we trade Tate I'd like to see us combine or swap assets with him to squeeze out a 1st rnd like we did in the PJ Tucker and EG trades. Ideally you would start with trading other assets and getting a late 1st then sending Tate and doing a pick swap with a team that thinks they're contenders but aren't like the Suns. That way you end up with another mid 1st rd pick.
Usually, I'd say a SRP or 2. I think Rockets will get 2 SRPs for him this deadline, but with a chance for a late FRP or really good SRP if things go well with the payroll locked teams.
In conclusion, Tate’s trade value is two 2nds but we think it’s three 2nds. I’m okay with it assuming Tari is a legit ? going forward, and if there’s a big trade this summer. not okay with the front office doing nothing at the deadline to improve the team. therefore, the tank is on for the 4th season
Well, since the thread is bumped anyway: I really like Tate as a bench guy but with the logjam we have I hope we barely see him on the court the rest of the way. If we're going to have a poor shooter out there who plays defense and can handle the ball a bit, I'll take Amen over Tate right now.
I think we have confirmation that the rockets were offered two 2nds for Tate. Sounds like that’s his value. Congrats to the 26% who voted accordingly
"Open" to trading like they were holding onto him tight. I'm actually surprised he wasn't traded last season. On a top heavy contender with a thin bench he could actually be a solid regular season minutes eater. A team like ours that is deep with rotation level talent and already has offensive issues there's very little use for him as a player.
My guess is the rockets had no interest moving him for 2nd rd picks because they valued his contract as a means to make a move for a star. Now that the Green/Sengun extensions are signed they may be feeling as though that type of trade is unlikely this season. And, they could just wait til the offseason to make that type of move with Jalen’s new contract. They may also be trying to do Tate a solid. He still would have a chance to make a rotation with another team and get a contract with them if they have his bird rights. The rockets probably weren't going to offer much more than the minimum this offseason and he's behind Cam and Holiday who aren't really playing either.
A new opportunity with a different team is what’s best for Tate, but unfortunately this is another case of waiting too long. No one is gonna give us anything of real value for half a season of Tate. He’s on an expiring deal. We should have taken the two 2nd rounders we were offered at last year’s deadline. Stone holds guys too long.
I sadly don’t think any teams will have virtually any interest in him as a player they think can help them win games this year. However there will be many teams looking to make salary maneuvers at the deadline and I could see him getting moved in a deal for 2nd rounders where both teams are furthering their interest of cap management and getting bench support both teams think aligns better with their needs for spot minute roles. The guy doesn’t shoot the ball. Not a great defender. Can’t pass. Not much of a handle…. But he does practice and play hard. He’s genuinely a good influence in the locker room and coaches obviously love him. If you had to play him 5 to 10 minutes a night he can guard multiple positions and he wont be a huge liability. Good guy to have at the end of your bench in case you get hit by injuries galore. Not a guy anyone is giving up a quality draft pick to get though.
