Forget Vietnam, we "won" Korea even less and basso brings it up as an example of future Iraq. Kind of funny for him to be juxtaposing those two points.
Given the play it gets from basso, one would think this would be a huge news story. Yet there is nothing on the front page of the NYTimes, WaPo, or even the Washington Times. Oh right, they did the story yesterday. Curious how nobody except basso's guy phrased it quite the way he did.
The other interesting thing about this is the number one fan of the "War President," the guy who has challenged any criticism of this administration with shouts of "War!," now posts an article that relegates the whole sorry mess to a "battle."
Meyerson's thoughts... and it's obvious the wingers have been emailing him with the ridiculous Germany, Japan, Korea drivel basso has pushed on us...
although iraq is becoming safer, the politicians are not taking the steps to reconcile... i admire how the many in the military are willing to stick it out in order to secure a lasting peace in iraq. however, they fail to realize that the rift between the different ethnic/religious groups goes back 100's of years. their problems predate the founding of the US. its not something that can be solved w/in a year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years.... if theyre willing to stick it out, thats good because now that we're there, we're basically stuck there. with recruiting/retension on a steep decline, there are only 3 options... a draft, increasing tours to 2+yrs, or sending in private armies... all options are bad... as far as a lasting peace in iraq, the only one i can see is if the US is there indefinately. could the iraqis eventually reconcile? maybe but i doubt it. all the factions are just waiting for us to leave so that they can gain control of the country for themselves...
