The Lakers are not the clear favorite, especially with Kobe and Bynum hurt...

Dallas was the favorite before the Kidd trade, and now I think San Antonio is the favorite....but we are a whisker away from either of those teams and could beat them both in a 7 game series.

The West is an utter toss up IMHO.

here is a gamble of a trade but it may be good for us for the next 3 years that is when tmac's contract is up we would be stuck with vince for at least one more year because the following year he would be an expiring contract which is always easy to trade to a non playoff team so it would be just one year we would be suffering from him not being motivated but while he is here with tracy it may rejuvenate them both which would be an A+ for us and we aren't really gambling our rotation players in this trade. the would have to take mike james back but he comes off in 2 years.

    rafer/brooks
    vince/bonzi
    tmac/shane
    scola/landry/shane
    yao/scola

end of game you go with the hot hands in the game may have battier at 4. what you guys think not as huge of a gamble as Dallas giving up harris

I like Andre Miller, but not for our team....Sam Cassell is a defensive liability with a poorer 3pt fg % than Rafer...Rafer is good ball handler...He needs to work on his mid range game and make better decisions when to and when not to drive...Is it me or is Shane Battier the only one on the court that's aware when and where to cut and choose strategic spots on the court to get rewarded with shot....

I believed Dallas and the Suns have made huge risk to take on older established players for younger ones particular for the future. However,
it is common for a good PG to contribute well until as old as 40yrs old
hence Dallas have improved slightly for the next few years.

Taking Shaq is of a higher risk as strong centers are on the slide fast after 35yrs old but given any game of the day, he can still contribute well. However, the Suns gave up Marion for him and Marion contribute a lot to the Suns hence the Suns did not improve much. hence the Suns is actually became weaker for the thread for playoff.

Now the Lakers is in prime time after taking Gasol. They are a young team with vets like Kobe, Odom and Fisher. They have made big stride to become a contender and whether we can compete with them depends on several factors. Yao need to clamp down Bynum and Scola need to stop Gasol.
TMac has to be playing within the level that he played during his Orlando times to match the offensive power of Kobe and hope Battier can slow Kobe down. Then again, Odom needs to be missing from the game. I don't think Rafer can deal with Fisher but Fisher do get injured and sometimes in bricking mode. Then again, their All Star Coach Phil would be a match to Adelman if not better. No wonder Popovich is not happy about Gasol trade.

The Nets are going to "give" an All Star caliber player to the Rockets for players that can barely crack the Rockets' 9-man rotation? Seriously?

And on top of that, NJ will have to cut and pay for some of the multiple players from this and the prior Kidd deal because rosters are limited to 15 players.

And on top of that, the Rockets will have to fill out their roster while paying double for the roster fill because they are over the LTax.

Sorry...not going to happen outside of a teenage wet dream.

The Lakers are my pick for winning it all, they'll make the playoffs w/o Kobe or Bynum during the regular season. Just as long as they are back by the playoffs, with PJ running the ship and their sheer size and athleticism I just see them as the clear favorite.

It's hard to argue with the Lakers going all the way. They lacked a post presence and Bynum was slowly becoming exactly what they lacked. Now with Gasol they don't have to wait on Bynum to develop. The fact that they made the trade and didn't even have to give up Odom is just insane. Not to mention they resigned Fisher the Rocket killer to shore up their back court.

They have the players and the coaching the only thing that may get in the way is injuries, but I agree Kobe has that look again. He believes they can go all the way.

Well, I believe that Yao and TMac have the talent to take us to the Finals, but they don't have the "heart of a champion" yet. Dream was right. The difference of how Yao plays, especially, is all in his head. When he gets "up" to play Shaq, he plays great. But, Yao is not consistent yet, like a Russell, Jabbar, Magic, Bird, Jordan or Dream.

For some reason, Yao and TMac take turns, instead of teaming up to kill opponents.

This is the only reason I wanted to get Kidd. Yes, he's old. But, he has that heart, and can drive a team, and I just don't know if either Yao or TMac has the drive to do that.

But, if they ever did, we COULD win the championship, IMHO.

It was a toss-up. It's now a two horse race between Dallas and L.A.

Kobe and Baynum will be healed by the time the playoffs come around - t-mac won't.

I love your faith, but we don't have Hakeem and Clyde, we got T-mac and Yao. they can't carry our motley crew to a ring. They simply aren't good enough.

The bar has been raised in the west, and even San Antonio might only be on par with the upgraded teams.

One thing is for sure, we are also-rans unless we make a move.

I don't think Kobe will be healthy the rest of this year if his hand is not fixed.

And Bynum is still very raw......

I think the Lakers are good, but still not completely sold on their mix.....

However, they have a lot of young talent and a good mix......they are certainly a force.

I think the Rockets will compete better as a team this year, they are far less relient on one or two players.....they have many others who are capable of stepping up.

And Scola, I think he is the Sura like X factor that this team needs.

Even though we don't have enough talent there is no excuse for giving a 100% effort in every game. That's the only way we can make the playoffs.

i'm very curious to see how the suns and the mavs will work out for the remainder of the season. and, i'm not totally sold on the lakers, either; maybe that's because i've hated the lakers for a long time now...

the problem is - all 8 other top west teams have talent (loads of them) also.

our talent was supposed to be great w/ james and francis (with their potential) but they haven't done jack.

but every team has talent. the first round is going to be tougher than the finals for most west teams ;)

NJ is trying to give vince away right now if you have been keeping up with what is going around the league right now and all they are asking for is expiring deals now far as filling your rosters spots and paying the LT the two teams that reach the finals this year will pay the LT. east detriot and boston west LA, PHOX, and Dallas and if denver gets artest they will be included the bottom line is for us to compete this and next year and so on Les will have to dig in his pocket book and pay the LT.

Also GATER you can go to ESPN insider to look and see that vince carter will be given away probaly before the trade dead line. so someone will get him for cheap. if you don't have an insider account let me know and i will send you a link or just go to hoopshype.com it is on there also that is why i said to give up expirings for him it may be that it will not happen till thursday at 1:58 PM but it is worth a try because we will not make a lot of noise with what we have we will have to pay the LT to make some noise
