while i support my Rockets unconditionally, i'm reluctant to endorse them as potential NBA champs.

    but i'm hopeful!

I agree with you to an extent.

Jason Kidd and Shaq are go for the gusto moves that are pretty much title or fail. Long term, they deplete the teams resources and give diminishing returns.

If the only move/s available to the Rox are of this ilk, then I'd pass too and let the season play out. I'm not into renting players at the cost of the future unless that player is Kobe or Lebron.

In my mind the only way to answer the question of whether we have enough talent is this:

On paper, who will be favored in a 7-game series - Rockets or Lakers.

For some reason, I think the Lakers are going to struggle during the playoffs because of Kobe and Bynum's injuries.

Kobe should get his finger fixed, if I were playing against him I would be slapping at that hand every time he drove the lane....

Yes we do have a lot of talent. But the problem is that almost evey team in the west have just as much as talent and thats where things get hard.

What is wrong with exploiting a weakness? Isn't that what teams do to our players?

If someone has a weakness, you expose it and utilize it to your own advantage.

Smack Kobe on the hand......make his hand smart....

I did not say it would be easy, but that we are just as talented as the rest.

To me, the Lakers are the most talented team in the NBA now. They are clearly more talented than us. Of course more talents don't always mean wins.

    Bynum+Gasol = Yao+Scola
    Odom > Battier
    Kobe > Mac
    Fisher+Farmar > Alston+Brooks

where's bonzi and landry? i don't think gasol has a chance of keeping landry off o the offensive boards one damn bit.

and who can guard bonzi on that team in the post?

Let's compare the Lakers to the Rockets:

Center: Yao Ming vs. Paul Gasol. Slight Edge Rockets. Gasol has greater quickness and range, but Yao counters with strength and height.

Power ForWARD: Scola vs. Bynum. Big Edge Lakers. Scola is a hustle player. But Bynum is no push-over, and beats Scola is athelticism, height, and talent. Bynum will win this match-up

Small Forward: Odom vs. Battier: Even - In reality they probably won't match up since Battier will guard Kobe for significant minute. But nevertheless, Odom's offensive edge cancels Battier's D.

Shooting Guard: T-mac vs. Kobe: Slight Edge Lakers - Kobe is just a better player now than t-mac.

PG: Alston vs. FIscher: Slight Edge Lakers - Derek FIscher is a Rafer Alston who can shoot.

Bench: Landry/Wells/Brooks/Hayes/etc vs. Farmar/Walton/Turiaf/Ariza/Sasha/ Slight Edge Lakers. When Healthy, the Lakers will get the better end of the stick here.

Coaching: Phil Jackson vs. Rick Adelman Let's see, 9 vs. 0. Ok, that's a clear advantage to Phil

Add in the fact that the Lakers know Phil's system a lot better than the Rockets know Adelman's, and it's not close.

Individual talent is not as important as team talent.

The Rockets can play with the Lakers......

    Team chemistry trumps individual talent.

Except the Lakers have great "team" talent and chemistry. Those guys are hungry. Kobe is super hungry, and everyone else on that team wants their first ring. It's a PJ team.

They are the favorite's no doubt...and when bynum, ariza, and mihm come back....they will be even scarier.

I do not think we can beat them unless we upgrade at the pg or gain another triple threat perimeter player.

Before Dallas got Kidd and L.a. got Gasol, I would have said we have a shot. Now I don't think so anymore.

Let's just hope we don't face L.A. or Dallas in the first round.

In regards to the thread title: I'm not sure. I know we haven't seen this team hit their ceiling yet so it remains to be seen.

But we've seen the Spurs, Suns, and Mavs hit their ceiling over the past 2-3 years. The Suns and Mavs weren't getting the job done so I don't blame them for trying something new.

if we do not make a trade for a player of mike miller type this would be such a waste of a season in my opinon. really don't think we have enough right now to move beyond the second round of the playoffs. we seem to have a good relationship with upper managment with the grizzlies we need to deal with them again on miller please morey i am begging you for this. we have fought back from being damn near 10 games under .500 it would be all for nothing if we do not put some type of trade together for this last little push that this team needs. I do not want to be on this thead this summer talking about our what a waste of time all this was or we should have kept loosing so that we can have more ping pong balls. i look at all of the teams we will face and they are all making moves to improve themselves and getting ready for the playoffs well morey it is now our time or all this will be for nothing. (by the way if the artest to denver trade goes through it will be a nightmare for the west considering denver is not giving up a damn thing for him)

give them the draft pick that they want and if the need cash to buyout francis give them that also we need to be aggresive here before it is to late. Wish mr alexander would turn into mark cuban for the next 3 days just to make this deal here work. If we have to we will keep novak and give them brooks. Navarro would just like to have him for the playoffs but i know he may be a longshot can't hurt to try because they are going to loose him and maybe bonzi gets wavied and not pull a Jerry Stackhouse and we can sign him back after the 30 days i am really reaching now but it would be nice.

    rafer/brooks/james
    tmac/Navarro
    battier/miller/
    scola/landry/bonzi(after 30 days
    Yao/scola/mutumbo

think we would be damn close to a championship with that rotation

Speaking of talents Rockets has, we should evaluate on balance.
Comparing the rosters these West power houses have, we are relatively poor. The title you put on this thread is just one side blindly positive.
