Agreed! I wish I had had teachers like that! And Rocket River's right, there IS a double standard here...if it was a guy...all hell would break loose.
Yeah, it is nice. I have had it happen and it is cool. Even though they seem like such kids, it is an ego boost to either hear about or have them tell you directly.
IMO in cases like this the "double standard" is justified. 1) Young female students can get pregnant 2) Young female students are at higher risk for picking up an STD from heterosexual sex than young males from heterosexual sex 3) Young females students are more physically vulnerable 4) Society places many more burdens and expectations on young women to refrain from sex 5) Perhaps due in part to 4, perhaps other physiological reasons, such events have more negative emotional consequences on young females. So as the physical, emotional and societal consequences tend to be greater the perpetraitor is a adult man (whether the victim is a teen girls or boy) IMO it is reasonable that the legal consequences are different when it is a teen boy and adult women (or at least within some judges discretion). Further, like so many said, many boys dream of such events and I think of those did have those experiences became reality, far fewer regret it down the line than with girls. The consequences are different.
Desert Scar, while everything you listed is true, I don't find any of it compelling. Is this essentially an argument for a double-standard in statutory rape? You can have sex with underage boys but not underage girls because girls are more vulnerable? That's a tough road to go down. Besides, it is possible that one or more of the boys may have been pretty uncomfortable with the whole situation but, because he's there with his peers, feels a lot of pressure to get a macho front. On the flip side, she may not have been charged with anything more serious because, in the prosecutor's discretion, they saw that it wasn't as serious as one would infer from the story. I'd point out, for one, that only 1 of the teenagers was charged with underage possession of alcohol.
Desert Scar, I agree with your post and would also like to add that adult men can physically overpower teenage girls while the same is not true of adult women and teenage boys.
I agree it is the same argument for "double standards" in statutory rapes cases, but I don't think I have a problem with that either. I think the typical 30 year old women liason with a 16 or 17 year old boy has less serious physical, social and emotional consequences than visa versa. I don't think it should be codified differently in the law, e.g., 1-5 years if the perpetraitor is a women versus 10-15 for a man--but I would expect judicial discretion to result in different sentences/punishments for typical cases of each because usually the consequences are much worse if the perpetraitor is a man.
You may be suprised how lenient the system is, when they find out it is consensual. Most of the time, no jail time is served. Check for the sex offenders in your area. http://records.txdps.state.tx.us/soSearch/default.cfm sad
