When one of these crackpots (that some of you are defending) takes a shot at my president, and the streets ignite in violence, a lot of folks that normally sit it out will be part of the retaliatory mob.
I think taking your gun anywhere near the President, or other elected officials during a protest is over the top. It is asking for trouble. Just because something is legal, it isn't always in the best sense.
As more and more people are shown doing this, I'd say I agree that they are making a statement of some sort (although in most cases it sounds like they have to carry them visibly by law, so really it's just the fact that they brought the guns in the first place). I'm certainly not defending them, but I also didn't think that it deserved the attention it was getting. And now it seems like its a phenomenon, people are joining in and doing it on purpose to make the statement. Finally, note that nobody has brought a gun into any of the forums where the President was. The only gun brought inside was in a town hall not visited by Obama, and the rest were all outside and away from where Obama was.
I could be wrong, but I imagine security wouldn't allow this. I'd guess you have to go through metal detectors, etc at any event with the Pres.
Yeah, that was my point. I cut off Deckard's comment about the Secret Service and then later decide to respond to it, but I think Secret Service is fine as long as these guns aren't actually near the President.
i've never understood gun nuts. but is anyone suggesting these guys are bringing guns specifically to these events, or are they just always packing heat?
I have a hard time buying that the first guy who showed up with a gun was just doing so because that is what he always does. While I don't think guys showing up with guns should dominate the news it is still news. For instance if I showed up outside a Utah Jazz rally wearing my Rockets shirt and carrying a gun I suspect that would be news.
I heard about people taking guns to public events. This is as stupid as it gets. This is so frustrating to see people acting this way. They will cost us some liberty and freedom for their foolish and reckless behavior IMO
I don't care what your opinion on gun rights - bringing guns to protests with the highly charged atmosphere on display and undeniably real is a BAD THING. If we can arrest a professor for yelling at a police offer on his own property under the guise of causing a disturbance, you'd think a guy toting an AR-15 at a town hall meeting would similarly qualify.
First of all, black people in today's society have it well. Everyone is afraid to offend them, b/c it might be considered "racism". I'm sick and tired of those who make this an excuse. Seriously--we're in the 21st century; stop being so sensitive and thinking that you are the only person being attacked b/c of your color.. No one gives a damn what color you are. You don't see Chinese ppl crying about building railroads. If anything, you should be thrilled that slavery enabled your current generations to have the genes you do now.. The only ppl who have the right to cry are the ones who actually went through it. Everyone else is just being immature and using past sufferings to excuse their current behaviors.
Thanks to both of you for clearing that part of it up. Like Rhester said, however, there is a danger of a backlash that will hurt ordinary citizens and gun owners. This isn't the kind of attention that's going to do any good for gun rights. Good lord, buddy... where the heck did that come from? If I had the energy, I'd find and post one of those train wreck images, a giant derailed one. Geez! If you feel like that, start a thread about it. You are a confused guy, IMO, but that's your right.
