Maybe I'm missing something here. NJ is trying to dump salary...that's been their motivation for the Keynon Martin and Kerry Kittles deals. If they trade Kidd it will be to dump salary. So, then why would NJ trade Kidd to us if it doesn't help them dump salary? We can't use the TE to cover any of Kidd's salary, so we'd have to ship back 85%+$100K of his salary in return. Do you really think that NJ is going to trade Kidd for a bunch of roster fodder just to save a couple of million dollars in salary? It makes no sense.
kidd can rework his contract in 2 years, and, anyway, cross that bridge when we get to it. you cant always be worrying about what's going to happen 3 years down the line, especially when an amazing opportunity at a championship in the next 2 years is looking you in the face right now. i've got news for you folks. the team we have now aint winning a championship. we are a 6-8 seed as it stands now. so, we can spend the next 2 years being overly-optimistic, as we've grown accustomed to doing, or we can add the best pg in the league, and be instant contenders, probably favorites even. and, as far as saying "it's just not a good fit", that is laughable. There is one player in the league who is a good fit no matter what team he is playing for, and can adjust his game to any situation he's facing, and that's jason kidd.
Contracts cannot be re-worked in the NBA, and yes we do have to worry about 2 years down the line. Since when do you decide that we're a 6-8 seed? If we get Kidd and don't win the championship within 2 years, we are royally screwed. Personally, I think that if we get a backup C and a backup PG, there aren't 8 teams better than us in the entire NBA much less the Western Conference. Kidd, T-Mac and MoT alone will be making 40M. That's excluding anyone we draft, anyone we sign, Juwan Howard, and Yao Ming. The cap will be around 45-46M. So Yao Ming's rookie deal puts us at the cap. Also keep in mind that: 1) The Nets will not take MoT. 2) The TE cannot be combined with another player to acquire a single player. 3) Our draft pick is a late first rounder. 4) The Blazers, Bulls, Knicks and Hawks can offer tremendous cap relief and talent in exchange for Kidd. Basically, if we get Kidd and we don't win the championship in the following 2 years, this franchise is in huge trouble. It's VERY easy for you to authorize this deal - it's not your money, it's not your future and you must know very little about the financial side of the NBA to promote this trade so wholeheartedly without any concerns.
Oh, and in response to your post, Jason Kidd is not a perfect fit for all teams. He's a liability when it comes to scoring and is slowing down, which is affecting his defense. Aside from that, me and you BOTH know that Jason Kidd plays better on a running team, while the Rockets are a low possesion team - it's JVG's philosophy. Kidd is not worht the MAX on a running team at his age, he sure as hell isn't worth the MAX for 5 years on a halfcourt team.
I think Kidd will be traded to GSW. He's a Bay Area native. Yeah they just signed Fisher to a big deal but I think they can play together. Jason can handle the ball most of the time and Fisher will be the spot up shooter. On defense, Kidd will defend the opposing 2 guard. Kidd to GSW for Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy, Speedy Claxton and Clifford Robinson. the Nets get 3 youngsters to go with RJ and a veteran with a short contract in Cliffy. WARRIORS SF: Dunleavy/ PF: Biedrins/D. Davis C: Foyle/Eschmeyer PG: Kidd/Dickau SG: Fisher/Pietrus NETS SF: Jefferson PF: Murphy/Robinson C: Collins/Krstic PG: Claxton/Planinic SG: Richardson/Harris
Regardless of whether we would like Kidd or not, and I do think he'd take us to the championship for a couple years, we don't have what they need to engineer a trade. I would assume they are looking for the following: 1) cap relief 2) value in trade in picks and young talent 3) cheap veterans who will stay through the rebuilding 4) a contending team to satisfy Kidd I think they are purposely making these moves to piss off Kidd, so he demands a trade, and they then have no choice but to trade him. Kidd does have a lot of value to a team like San Antonio, Memphis, Dallas, Indiana, Denver, Houston and the Lakers, who would be one player away from taking it all. Kidd would take most of those teams to a championship, I think. Now, that's valuable! It could get into a bidding war, even if he hurt their team's caps 3 to 5 years from now. So, which of those teams have the most to offer? San Antonio could offer Parker/Ginobli/Rose. With Kidd, there's no doubt that they'd win the NBA championship, even losing those 3. Kidd/Barry/Bowen/Duncan/Nesterovich. killer. Kidd originally wanted to go to San Antonio anyway. You can bet he'd be pushing for that trade in a hurry, and NJ would come out a winner too. West would look like a mastermind if he pulled that trade off, and then moved to get Dampier. Memphis could offer Williams/Swift, Williams/Wright, Williams/Miller, Williams/Wells or Williams/Outlaw, if they wanted the 1 year contract relief, and throw in a draft pick or two. Dallas could offer Lattner/Daniels/Harris, which would give NJ both cap relief and young talent. I'm not sure that Dallas would go all the way with that team, though, though they'd be in the thick of it. Besides, Kidd has "been there, done that." Now, if they could somehow pull off Carter ... Indiana could offer Tinsley/Bender/Croshere or Tinsley/Bender/Pollard. Indiana would be immediate contenders, and NJ would get some good talent. Denver could offer Miller/Tskitishvili/s&tWhite. The Lakers could offer Fox/Butler/Rush/George, but I doubt they'd want that, and Payton would sure be pissed. And, Houston just can't offer them anything better than any of the other teams. The only thing we can offer them is a little cap relief, which isn't that important with who they have to trade now. We could offer them Howard/Boki/Lue/Pike/Gaines, and take Mourning and Harris back with our TE to save them over 6 mil in salaries, but they can get better trades than that. So, I just don't see Houston getting in on this. But, I think Kidd could tip the scales for the next couple years for whomever gets him. The one thing that I MIGHT do, if I was Houston, would be to get in on a trade with Indiana, so that Kidd doesn't end up in our conference, and maybe we can pick up a player we need, such as Pollard for backup center. That would be a good use of our TE, and perhaps give Indiana a leg up, by also giving NJ some cap relief in the deal.
Here's someone that is thinking logically. Could be a good trade for both teams. And as Sane has pointed out, there is no package that we could or would want to send to NJ that even makes a trade feasible.
Sherlock makes some good trade possiblities as well. I like the idea of somehow helping out on one of the trades and filling in some of our holes.
If there was any way to get him without giving up Yao or T-Mac, we should definitely go for it...but I think he'll end up back in Dallas.
It's amazing how a new article can change the fate of a thread. It was a joke yesterday, and today everyone started taking it seriously.
If we do get JKidd we would be automatic contenders. This would be short term goals vs. long term goals. If we could bring Kidd and not lose Yao/Tmac everyone else would be expendable for that. Kidd is better suited for a run/gun fast break game but is good enough (leadership/court vision) to play a slow down half court game. He just didnt have the pieces in NJ to properly run that. JKidd running the point with Tmac at his side? (that would be the best backcourt ever) not just best backcourt in the NBA but maybe in history. Yao anchoring the middle? wow that is a monster team.. I would personally love to see that happen and worry about repercussions later. I think that move would put us in position to win a championship this year or next (depending on their health). I hope NJ doesnt want to help an Eastern team (rival) and hopes to move him across the conference. Yao/Tmac/JKidd and scrubs will be aweosme to watch. J
Except that I still think that the Rox wouldn't a chance to get Kidd. Kidd makes 14 million dollars. Since the TE isn't big enough to take his salary, we would need to add 2 out of MoT, Spoon, and Howard. No way NJ will want those contracts. If the Rox gets into a deal, it will be because we can take on a spare contract in a three-way deal to make it work capwise, like what San Antonio did last year with the Brad Miller trade. Possibly Dampier if Kidd goes to GS.
I'm not going to rule it out. Kidd is enough to bring the ring. It's a perfect fit. We've worked with NJ before. There are some possibilites here. Bottom line is, if you need a pg, and the best one becomes instantly available, you have to do what it takes to get him here. In two years Yao and McGrady should be good enough to win with a disabled Kidd. So there's no excuse for not making a trade. Kidd would still be in the top 15 point guards if he was walking up the court in 2 years. I'm not saying I know how it could get done. I'm just saying that it's a good fit physically.
Kidd hasn't brought a ring to anyone and I highly doubt he would bring one here. Word is that he is a locker room cancer. It's not a coincidence that he has been on so many teams. Plus there is the fact that he is a huge injury risk. Let some other team take a chance.
Yao and TMac are used to dominating the ball as much as Kidd. I don't think you can keep all 3 happy.
if you watch JKidd play he is very unselfish. He seems to enjoy getting his teammates the ball in the right place and right time. Only concern I have with him is can he feed a big man? He hasnt really had a low post player that I can remember. KMart is not a true low post player he is more like a big/ strong SF that likes to run and dunk. I think Jkidd would be a great fit on this team for his leadership and court vision. Since he doesnt care about scoring as much he will try to win a championship with us. *JKidd wasnt really used to having to score but took on more scoring responsibilities when the Nets started losing scorers. J
Sane, I always enjoy your reality based post. And I won't pretend to understand the salary cap implications of trading for Kidd. But if we were able to trade for him and keep our core of Yao, TMac, Howard and JJ... how could we pass that up?! I realize that Kidd is getting old... but he will be like Stockton and able to play until his late 30s early 40s if he wants to and still be a top 5 - 10 point guard. He is the only point guard in the league right now who makes everyone on his team better (Nash might be close). If signing him allowed us make a run at the finals for the next 3 years... GO FOR IT.
Stockton didn't have as much milage as Kidd because he didn't run as much. Kidd needs to run to be effective, and he's almost never had to slow it down. When was the last time he played with a post player? I'd be worried. He just had surgery. Now, I'm 50-50 on getting him or not, assuming we actually were ABLE to get him. Think about this: Kidd's knee bothers him. He plays through it, then before the playoffs, POP. It's over. Let's check the damage: - Th Rockets had to trade a one of the PF's, and probably either Pike or Boki to get him. We lack depth, our only PG is Lue.. Safe to say,w e're out of the playoffs. - We have a PG who is into his 30's, getting surgery on his knee for the SECOND time in 2 years. He's locked up for 4 or 5 more years at MAX money. He can't shoot, his speed is diminished, and his laterall quickness suffers as well as a result of the injury. - We go into the following season needing to win the Championship. There will be no help. Our payroll will be WAY up there - we'll have used the TE and some short contracts to get Kidd. There's no help coming, Les won't allow us to spend anymore money - we'll have 30M+ committed to only Kidd and T-Mac with Yao's extension being negotiated. No signings to help us out, JJ and Lue come off the books. - Now, a miracle would see us win the title. But if we don't, at this point we're looking at a huge payroll, an undermanned roster, we can't move Jason Kidd, and we can't afford to pay 3 players the MAX without getting rid of everything. We become the New jersey Nets - so close for 2 years, but can't afford it anymore. Someone has to go - we either trade Kidd for some horrible Pippen-like deal, or we watch Yao or T-Mac go somewhere where they have money. I told you, I'm 50-50 on it. But lots of people are saying "do it and worry later" or "it's perfect, get it done" when it's far from that. We would be taking a humongous risk with this, and even if we win a ring in the next 2 years, would have to deal Kidd away when Yao's contract kicks in. The only way we'll be able to trade him would be if he was healthy and was actually winning. We can take our chances, ofcourse. But we can take another route - something low-risk. What are the chances Yao/T-Mac won't make the Finals or won't have a shot at a ring? IMO, one more move this season and one good move next season will put us in a similar but lower risk position. I'm not looking for flash, I'm looking for rings.
