It is just anticlimactic for US to provoke China right now when US needs cooperation from China on so many critical issues. It's also against the America's political pragmatism. Is the Obama administration trying to save their faces after his last travel to Asia?

    Not a wise move.

Again, it isn't like China was stepping up to "cooperate with the US on so many critical issues" until this point. So nothing changes.

why does china have the right to be so powerful anyways?

taiwan is a small country that could easily be dominated by china. i dont understand why china has any reason to feel threatened.

..unless they we're planning to do something...

They both (US & China) know they can't really do anything to really hurt the other, the relationship is similar to that of conjoined twins, they can't stand being stuck together as they are two different people, but are unable to change that.

Given that the main reason the Commies hold power in China is because they have provided great economic growth, I think the Chinese populace would be very displeased with them going back to the dirt-eating days of Mao. Just a thought.

China and US in angry clash over Taiwan arms sale

China has cancelled all military exchanges with the US in a furious response to the proposed $6.4 billion sale of advanced missiles and helicopters to Taiwan by Washington.

Beijing has also imposed sanctions on the companies selling the arms and threatened to review co-operation on other issues.
The US responded defiantly, insisting that the sales would contribute to regional security.

Announcing its retaliation, Defence Ministry spokesman Huang Xueping said: “We made the decision out of considerations on the severe harm of the US arms sales to Taiwan. The US plan will definitely seriously disturb the relations between the two countries.”

Vice foreign minister He Yafei said the US arms deal with Taiwan would lead to an "aftermath both sides would not prefer" and called on Washington to reverse its "erroneous" decision.

Mr He said China was "strongly indignant" about the package of weapons, which includes 114 Patriot anti-missile missiles, 60 Blackhawk helicopters and two minesweepers, which was submitted to the US Congress for approval on Friday.

"The US plan will definitely undermine China-US relations and bring about a serious negative impact on exchanges and co-operation in major areas between the two countries," said Mr He in a statement.

There have been no signs Beijing will try to use its US dollar assets to pressure Washington, or impose broader trade penalties – both steps that would undercut China's own economic strength.

But China's Defence Ministry said military exchanges would be put on hold and Beijing postponed vice ministerial-level talks on security, arms control and non-proliferation.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou told reporters the weapons would give "Taiwan more confidence and a sense of security to go forward in developing cross-Strait relations".

You are out of your tiny mind.

    A RIGHT to be powerful?

No major country has the balls to officially call Taiwan a "COUNTRY". And it is not, just suck it up, and you're cleared of your pipe dream to be protected by some big brother.

And Taiwan is always a b**** to be ****ed by whoever the hooker is. Don't forget that.

And people wonder how Taiwan could possibly ever feel threatened. Thanks for illustrating the attitudes that require Taiwan to buy these weapons much more clearly than I ever could.

There are plenty of foreigners posting in a Chinese forum(mostly English version, though) under such names, so do not worry.

Our world is a colorful one, isn't it?

Now US is someone trying to take Taiwan as his concubine. HAHA.

Bad move anyway. It provides PLA to ask for more funds for weaponary build up . Well maybe that's what exactly the US military industry complex wants. The US shoots two birds with one stone: make money for selling weapons to Taiwan, and exhaust PRC's resources. The soviet union was beat that way: overexpansion in military.

Well maybe Taiwan is secretly passing the most updated weapon technology to the PLA, like somebody else already said before. What are you going to do about it?

Great news, Libya gets some weapons too... Lets militarize everyone, it'll only spread peace

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/01/30/russia.libya.arms/index.html?hpt=T2

Report: Russia to sell Libya weapons in $1.8 billion deal

Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- Russia signed a deal with Libya to provide nearly $2 billion in arms to the North African nation,

    Russian state media reported Saturday.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced the contract with Libya on Saturday, news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The agency did not have specifics of the 1.3 billion euro ($1.8 billion) deal inked Friday, but reported that Putin said it was "not only for small arms and light weapons."

Rosoboronexport, Russia's government-run arms export agency, previously said it had five military contracts with Libya that included "military equipment for its ground forces and the navy, the modernization of T-72 tanks and spare parts supplies," RIA Novosti reported.

I still find it amazing that the USA has effectively been able to 'circle' both China and Russia and maintain that noose for as long as it has. Things can always change, but as is I think China's neighbors are adequately terrified by China's rising prominence in the region that they won't likely be getting rid of their security blanket any time soon. This is no different than the Arab Gulf nations being terrified of the rising menace to their east (Iran) and demanding U.S. presence and security measures/arms to attempt and counter that threat.

The military-industrial complex might still be the best way to get out of this recession, albeit we will need strategists who are much more cautious in exploiting this massive advantage we have in our favor (read no more dumb and costly nation-building projects that drain our treasury without offering any economic upside to speak of). American power should be applied in an assertive yet intelligent manner, I am not one of those who believe the world would be better off without American leadership.

I hate to break it to you, but the USA had a relationship with the KMT/Taiwan before there was a PRC. This is hardly some new development.

And when Zhou Enlai and Mao were sucking up to Richard Nixon, Nixon told both of them that the United States was going to do EXACTLY what we are doing now. And those two agreed to it in exchange for the UN recognition and the other stuff that Nixon negotiated.
