Can somebody tell me, why in the world do we and a lot of teams insist on having the player in the corner run to the other side after passing the ball into the post??? It's 90% of the time a double-team on Dwight where he's forced a bad shot, a TO or pass out that leads to nothing.

It is to open up the floor for Dwight and help reduce the double team. If the player stood too close to Dwight, it would be easier to bring the double team and guard against the pass back outside.

Well it does the opposite, it causes players to double team..

It also opens a player up on the opposite corner when his defender leaves his man to double Dwight. If Dwight is able to consistently pass out of the double team, the defense has to scramble to cover the open man.

Dwight has been really bad at passing out of doubles since we got him. Instead of making the simple pass, he is always looking for the homerun. I would prefer him go for the Hockey assist.

Yeah, that's been on my mind a lot, too. Since we got Dwight to have a strong big-man post presence but our M.O. is to shoot the most threes in history, you'd think that inside-out passing would have been top priority to lock down as soon as he got here. Just isn't happening, though. Can't understand that; he'd be great focal point for opening up the arc. Instead, we give him the ball in the post and clear the entire side of the court, so it's all-or-nothing Dwight. I just don't get it. I just don't get it at all. And, dammit, he was pick-and-rolling nicely when he first came back from injury, but now he's starting to post up again. *cries* Why can't do what makes sense?

He's been playing really well and he's getting better. I have high hopes for him
    In the playoffs

Nothing wrong with causing the double team, as that means someone else is open. The problem comes when Dwight doesn't recognize the double team in time, or at all.

i get the logic here, but it also puts 4 of our players all on the same half of the court. Dwight has to recognize the double team and then throw a pass across the court over his man, past the help defender, and past the defenders that are waiting to jump the lane.

i hate this tactic. Harden should inbound to Howard and wait right there. If Harden's man leaves to help (doubt it) it's a simple pass for Howard to make back to Harden. If someone else helps, there is better spacing on the other side. I like his chances passing to 3 Rockets defended by 2 a lot more than i like 4 rockets defended by 3.

To me to cut across or stay is dependent on the flow of the game and the defender guarding Dwight and whoever is moving/staying. There's reason to do either one and in the end if Dwight can't make that pass out of the post there's no point of doing either.

Maybe the problem is that we're spoiled by having watched Hakeem. It's all the little things like this that separate the really good players from the great players. Honestly the floor is spread because with zones now legal, the same passing lane traps the Sonics would employ on the Rockets would be used again if the original passer is kept in the same area. You only leave the passer in the same area if the defense tends to commit late double teams with the doubler coming from the perimeter.

This is also why having a great shooting point guard is so important and why Curry is so lethal. His defender can't run the risk of committing to double a post player forcing the defense to double or trap from the interior opening up easy cutting lanes to the basket.

If Howard drew consistent double teams then knew when to pass out of them, we'd be lethal offensively. It's when he just forces it up with no chance of making it that's frustrating.

Removes guards from digging. Simple spacing. End of discussion here.

Your post-player should have eyes at the back of their head if you're not gonna let the player who made the entry pass run to the other corner.

-The defender of the entry passer is nearer to the post-up player, so it is easier for them to double-team the post-up player and the double team comes from the blind side of the post-up player. That will result a higher rate of steals/turnovers.

-If the defender of the entry passer comes to double team, the post-up player might not see the open entry passer immediately because he's behind his focus view.

-If the entry passer runs to the other corner and they double but we still can't get a decent shot, the problem might be (1) your post player sucks at finding the open man, (2) no proper spacing, or (3) no movement for cutting towards the basket.

uh, that's a Triangle option/play that Tex Winter's invented, which is very easy to implement into every system.

Are you talking about the back screen that a Big gives after an entry pass when the passer runs past him to shed his defender, often for a handoff or a drop off.

    Here's the play:

It is actually the best way to clear out, so they don't double down. If he stays there, they can double down as they did the Hakeem and Yao for many years.

So, you clear out. But not along the arc. Rather it is best to clear out by going directly passed the low post player who you just passed, too, because that's gives you a hand-off option as the corner man uses the big man as a screen to shed his man. He can hand off right then (or drop off from above), which is so potent that the big defender has to stop that, which further gives the offensive big a spin move the other way.

Yao and Mobley/Moochie did this over and over. Duncan does it all the time, too, as Parker runs by him.

It is a backscreen by the ball handler (the big man).

it's not about view, so much as the double coming from the entry passer is the easiest way to actually recover. Passing back to the passer is easier to recover too.

But the main point is it is a backscreen by the man with the ball, which is very potent offense, very tricky to defend when your post man has a deadly spin move if defender must show to the guy getting the screen, to stop the handoff.

He's been out most of the year... no timing nor consistency in their post game. I remember Hakeem and co's passing in and out of the post... it's like ping pong. They should do drills like that. Pass out reestablish post/pass in/shoot three... that should be like clock work.

Well, there you go. More reasons why the entry passer should cut to the other corner. :)
