Actually thats almost exactly why they backed away from signing him...he was hesitant of playing a backup/complimentary role and was looking to get starter minutes....

The Bulls still have interest in signing seven-time all-star Tracy McGrady, but they want some assurances that he's serious about accepting any role that helps the team win. Specifically, the Bulls would like to see McGrady accept a non-guaranteed contract. That way, if he lives up to his word, everything will be fine. If he balks at accepting a limited role, the Bulls can let him go.

Before sitting down with management and coach Tom Thibodeau, McGrady spoke with reporters and addressed the issue of whether a veteran two time scoring champion works as a bench player on a young team. He sounded as if his joining the Bulls was a foregone conclusion. "I fit in well," he said. Problem was, he won't just keep his mouth closed and let his game do the talking. He's still talking in future terms of what he will do, and is expecting others to already compensate and accommodate a future that is uncertain.

people rip yao for saying he might quit if he cant come back due to his injuries, calling him quitter, and then people rip tmac for not wanting to quit due to his injuries and wanting to make a valiant showing.. never satisfied... can't blame the guy for having a glass half full view.
