what do you guys prefer for when you get an oil change or change it yourself? How much do you guys pay synthetic vs regular oil if you do let someone else change it? What are the benefits with synthetic?
Synthetic. Less wear on the engine and will go longer between changes. I buy mobil one at Costco since it's usually on sale ones every few months. Some people like gardening, I like changing oil and jamming out on the weekends.
Awesome guys I knew synthetic would be preferred but was curious. I feel you reeko pretty much mine too
I thought you had a mechanic change your oil and battery recently and you felt like you got ripped off?
I change my own oil (and also the oil filter at the same time). I always use synthetic, and usually just buy it and the filter from WalMart. It's around $40. I bought Fumoto Valves for each car to make changing oil easier. It's like a spigot, and has a nozzle on the end that you can slip tubing over. Then you run the tubing into a container and and open the valve to drain the oil. The only messy part is changing the oil filter. I use jack stands and wheel chocks to lift the car, but some people drive up on ramps.
Is there any downside to synthetic or is it a slam dunk? There is no risk switching an old vehicle to synthetic?
I was also told. . . once you go Synthetic . .you cannot go back to the other oil Had one mechanic try to sell me on a 'flushing' of my oil system Another told me it was upsell bullshit Rocket River
I use raw organic abiogenic oil and a hemp filter -- I have an oil and filter change by my local artisan every 50-100 miles. I'm not sure how necessary such frequent changes are on a Tesla, but I enjoy supporting the local green economy.
Yeah that is bs, they even sell blends. Often times Mobil 1 has rebates that are pretty nice. Last time I got the 5qt $12 rebate and a 5qt+filter $15 rebate and Pennzoil has similar ones.
You can go back... But if you're doing your own there is no reason to. Flushes are real but I'd only trust it if I am the one doing it myself. You can tell a difference if you do a flush before rebuilding an engine. There's a lot of little tricks though, like ATX (transmission fluid) works awesome (add 1 qrt in place of oil etc.). On a side note, if you change fluid correctly/regularly you probably won't need to flush.
I only use mobil 1 synthetic, and only buy from Amazon/Wal-Mart. Huge savings and since I do it myself I know it's really synthetic.
