This. Some of the fans here just want to downplay Lin's D. Lin's D is fxxxxxx underrated. 22% - this is the % that Lin forced his opponents to turn the ball over when they were driving to the lane. He is a defensive beast indeed! Many players didn't play enough minutes to get their right to be ranked. For example: M.Morris, 0.4 ppp 5 for 22 so ... small example... according to this... 1.03 ppp by Harden is really terrible... Harden is a black-hole on the defensive end right now. Harden is saving his energy and PF to play 40+ mins. I blame this on bad coaching and bad rotation.
Yes they count the steals, but I don't think all are counted. Sometimes his steals come from help defense.

Update after 11 games: Overall PPP(Point per possession allowed): Lin: 0.76(ranked 70 in NBA for all positions so far) Harden: 0.94(ranked 219) Parsons: 0.9(ranked 185) Patterson: 0.88(ranked 172) Asik: 0.9(ranked 185) Douglas: 0.84(ranked 142) Morris: 0.7(ranked 45) Below is the stats from last season: Lin: 0.81(ranked 128) Harden: 0.85(ranked 218) Parsons:0.83(ranked 166) Patterson: 0.89(ranked 302) Asik:0.71(ranked 24) Douglas: 0.87(ranked 257) Morris: 0.98(ranked 422) Marcus Morris had a big jump from last year. It's still early and he's playing backup minutes, but you have to love his improvement. Lin improved from last season and is a very good defender. Asik's stats took a hit especially after the lakers/Utah game facing elite big men in the NBA. He should be back but seems to be less efficient on defense than last season with starting minutes. Parsons is less efficient on defense but it's understandable with his increased minutes and responsibility on offense. Douglas showed some improvement so far. Harden has a long way to go, but his overall package is still promising at such a young age.
Our team defensive rating (DRtg, points per 100 possessions) is 105.2, ranked 20 in the league. A young team usually don't play good team defense.

This is a good estimate of PPP. Synergy sports counts the PPP allowed, but sometimes it's due to teammates' help defense. Over time things will even out, and the average on large amount of possessions will be meaningful.

Lin isn't a good defender. Too slow laterally, easy to to change direction on, and he's getting caught in no man's land trying to help. Douglas has been making the same mistakes in trying to help on def. Then throw in Harden... Those 3 are just a bad def combo. It's the post-TMac trade all over again where the dribble penetration def from the guards were killing the Rockets/Yao. The Rockets need to find another David Wesley to play behind Lin.
In a few possessions, TD's phisical style and early clock work did make players like Lillard uncomfortable. That may give the coach wrong but strong first impression. Opponents figure it out pretty soon and TD was exposed. I think even Sampson realized it now.
at least when Lin struggles offensively he tries to make up defensively. but then again he is struggling offensively since coaching is forcing him to patrol the 3 pt line and play spot-up shooter which aren't his best qualities.
How is PPP calculated for a player? Does it take into account the defensive (offensive) ratings of his teammates (opponents) on the floor? I am interested to know whether synergysports provide the following stats: 1) PPP of teammates when a player is on the court/bench, 2) PPP of a player against different types of offenses, 3) PPP of a player against different types of players, and 4) PPP of a player, given the other four teammates on the court. I guess Rockets also keep track of all these data.
