Fader is ok, but Hype Hotel is where it's at. People camp out the whole day at Fader so it is almost impossible to get in even with an RSVP unless you show up early.
can anybody fill me in on any of the free events... i have never gone and this is kind of overwhelming!
This is a pretty comprehensive list of “unofficial” SXSW parties: http://projects.statesman.com/sxsw/ This is good for the bigger parties and it’ll tell you if you have to RSVP: http://ultra8201.com/ Some specific shows/series that should be good are Filter on Rainey Street: http://filtermagazine.com/index.php/news/entry/filter_at_sxsw_2014/ House of Vans at Mohawk: http://www.vans.com/eventsites/sxsw-2014/ Hype Hotel: http://www.hypem.com/hotel The Green Room at Brew Exchange (more underground-type stuff): http://www.itsthegreenroom.com/rsvp/ Also, if you do twitter, @SXSWPartyList and @SouthByFreeNOMS are good accounts to follow.
sweet thanks for these guys... I RSVP'd for a couple shows. There is one Showcase I wanted to see, is there anyway to just pay for one of these or do you have to have the badge? it is "Peter Rosenberg's rap and wrestling" if your wondering. I feel like the prices are ridiculous... why would anybody pay $1500 for these badges?
You can pay cash for pretty much any show at the festival. But it all depends on how popular that event is. I just looked at that lineup for the Peter Rosenberg show. I think it's going to be real hard to get into that show for two main reasons. It is at The Parish and on a Friday night. I've had badges and wristbands in years past and not even been able to get into the Parish. Your best and only bet is lining up like at 6pm in the pay line and trying to get in right at 8pm when the show starts. Or you can try to bribe the doormen at the venue, but the Parish bouncers are a bit gruff. The best days of the festival are Monday-Thursday. Friday and Saturday is such a mess on 6th street. Almost every year, I tell my group that we should just skip Saturday and go home early. If you have the time off early in the week, most all of these artists will usually be performing earlier on. Not much experience with the rap acts, but most other indie acts play at least 5-6 times at the festival during the week.
another good comprehensive list - www.showlistaustin.com what i like is that they allow you to select the shows you want to go to and then print out a list with just those.
My nephew's band is playing the Dr. Marten's show at Filter. My parents who are in their 60's and 70's went a few years ago to see him in a different band. Was hilarious to hear them talk about it.
I love SXSW - even more now that our offices are not downtown anymore and out at Bee Cave, so I get to choose when to deal with the insanity of the traffic. DD
Some punk drunk driver drove through a crowd tonight at SXSW in front of Mohawk. Heard 20 injuries some serious and at least 2 dead. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/MtOAdOFYtnA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>) just horrifying
Driver in custody. http://kxan.com/2014/03/13/two-killed-multiple-injuries-after-car-runs-through-crowd-downtown/
Terrible. I heard it happened at 12:30AM. I showed up at Swan Dive just down the street at 12:55AM. I didn't see any commotion though probably because I was further down the street. They actually have barricades all along those streets to prevent this very thing from happening.
