Well for all our stalkers here... do the casts show up for the showcase movies? Ket Bosworth, Charlize Theron, Demi Moore, Kristen Bell, Ludivine Sagnier, Claire Forlani, Thandie Newton ...
really hoping i can make it in for a weekend.... i love sxsw, and even though people b**** and moan that it's strayed from it's original intent one can still see a **** ton of great music for very very cheap.
Some worth checking out: Hayes Carll (Texas folk) Flosstradamus (DJ duo) CunningLynguists (don't be put off by the name) Tumi and the Volume (one of my favorite hip-hop acts of all time)
Anathallo Between the Buried and Me DeVotchKa Handsome Furs Ludo The Most Serene Republic My Morning Jacket Ravens and Chimes Tokyo Police Club The Weakerthans And a lot of other bands I've heard quite a bit about recently, but don't know enough about to make a decision yet.
my morning jacket playing here in htown with yo lo tengo at verizon before sxsw.... already got my tickets and i am freakin pumped.
for mmj??? i paid more for ryan adams (which was a pretty good concert, his endless blabbing notwithstanding).... mmj puts on a tremendous show and is well worth $40 imo.
Gotta recommend Fat Tony. I've played tons of shows with him and he is one of the best amateur musicians that Houston has at the moment. He's dedicated and his decent beats. It'd be worth somebody's while to see him at SXSW.
Yeah though I think you have to be a douchebag to pick that as the name of your band. "Oh! We're so clever! We picked an eons-old play on the word cunnilingus as our band name!"
A geezer's recommendations: Marcia Ball (Austin TX) - Boogie Woogie Asylum Street Spankers (Austin TX) - Uh, just an unpredictable live show Back Door Slam (Isle of Man UK)- retro blues rock Black Mountain (Vancouver BC) - nuvo Jefferson Airplane The Blue Van (Copenhagen DENMARK) - retro rock with a big Hammond B-3 Brave Combo (Denton TX) - mondo Polka Carolyn Wonderland (Austin TX) - Janis with a guitar Elf Power (Athens GA) - new rock Joe Ely (Lubbock TX) - especially if David Grissom is playing with him Fastball (Austin TX) - You know'em, you love'm Guitar Shorty (Harlingen TX) - great blues show The Iguanas (New Orleans LA) - latin beat with saxes Chuck Prophet (San Francisco CA) - new album is killer Reckless Kelly (Austin TX) - Austin's finest The Redwalls (Chicago IL) - rock chamelions, can rip off Bowie,Beatles,Stones and Dylan R.E.M. (Athens GA) - you ain't gettin in Paul Thorn (Tupelo MS) - AOR Waco Brothers (Chicago IL) - Country rock from Chicago with a cockney singer Yo La Tengo (Hoboken NJ) - all over the place
Wristbands can't be removed and transferred to other people. But you can try to buy individual door entries. Might be 10-20 bucks a person.
FYI. There are about 100 Canadian bands at SXSW this year and CBC’s Radio 3 is down there doing a lot of coverage including broadcasting several live concerts. These will also be archived if you want to hear them after the fact. Today’s concert was: The Most Serene Republic Shout Out Louds (from Sweden) The Constantines The Stills For more info check out the Radio 3 site at http://radio3.cbc.ca Here’s a list of the Canadian bands at SXSW with links to their Radio 3 pages. http://radio3.cbc.ca/blogs/2008/02/The-Canadians-at-SXSW-2008
Since Howling Hex And RTX are both performing, maybe they can put all their bull s**t aside and play some Royal Trux songs. Ain't gonna happen though, I'm just dreaming.
