Went to go see a buddy play at the Muzak tent, left only to hear that Pete Townsend played a couple songs right after I left.
What a great week! Was a spectator for a few less day parties than I would have liked, but had to work eight parties myself...at least a few of those had some nice perks, i.e. good bands, drink, food. The Island Records, the New Wales, and the BBC Radio parties were surprisingly good --- introduced to Amy Winehouse, Fratellis, The Wombats, etc. Showcase Highlights: Earl Greyhound Clem Snide Elvis Perkins (No Depression party) Menomena Midlake (Schubas party) Dead Meadow Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Polyphonic Spree (X2) Wish I had seen: Balkan Beat Box (cancelled) Rodrigo & Gabriela (immigration paper problem -- or so said the lead singer of Apostle of Hustle, who filled in) Midlake showcase (couldn't get in even with a badge) Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter (why in the name of all that's good did I go see the Presidents of the United States?) Andrew Bird Disappointing: Black Moth Super Rainbow Jason Isbell of DBT (missed Ghostland's showcase for it) Michael Gblicki of Rusted Root (great voice, none of the energy of Rusted Root) Alexi Murdoch
dude you missed out, Rakim even gave a shout out to James Brown! Also played the theme song to JUICE (The movie, Omar Epps, Tupac) In control of many like Ayatollah Khomeini Hang out wit Smith and Wesson, don't try to play me
twas a good time indeed. in 3 days i saw 25 bands, performed twice and drank lots of jim beam. i had a dentist appointment on thursday morning so i only went and saw oakley hall at antones on wed. night. early show (10) so i was able to get home and get to bed somewhat early. the highlight for me was seeing polyphonic spree at the convention center and than riding my bike over to stubbs and getting into the good, the bad and the queen. i thought it would be at capacity, but it was only about 2/3 full by 1:15. they put on a great show. as a huge clash and fela kuti fan, it was quite a treat to get to see that band. tony allen is one of the coolest dudes out there. jandek at the central presbyterian church. based on the recordings ive heard i was expecting something more sparse, but this was a real noise-fest. like sonic youth or the more "out there" parts of syd barret-era floyd. that was the first thing i saw on saturday and nothing topped it for the rest of the night. propping my bike up against a lightpost and precariously standing on it so i could see in the window at mohawk and watch the thurston moore set. saturday was an exercise is patience - couldnt get into stooges (as expected), amon tobin, lee perry, octopus project/black moth super rainbow. biggest disappointment: nellie mckay - i love her records and i think she is totally cute, but this show was a real waste of my time. she was 25 minutes late for some reason and when she came out didnt say a word. the stage was already not very high and when she sat down at the piano i couldnt see anything. im 6'2'' and was about half-way back. even standing on my tip-toes i could only see the top of her head. i only stuck around for 3 songs and left.
good god that is awesome! ive seen them a couple times, but not since they added the 2nd drummer. thanks for posting this!
My buddy who's judgement on this I trust said Perry Ferrell's new band absolutely sucked. He compared them to Huey Lewis and the News (in terms of suckage). ____ The 23 people at The Applicators show had a great time.
