last year the bands didn't have quite the big-name draw, but there were some great moments: -man man -Roky Erickson -Tunng -Dead Boy and Elephant Man -Kid 606 -Annie -The Stills -Wolfmother this year, having bands like Turbonegro, The Melvins, Rakim, Ghostface, Qui, etc., really has taken it up a notch. i've been doing work for VICE for several years. i've known those guys forever... (it's not necessarily a good thing ).
oh, yeah! our thursday day-party at Stubb's is as follows: 12:40 Panthers 1:20 Pelican 2:00 Boris 3:05 The Melvins you can rsvp here: http://www.vicesavestexas.com/ . (rsvp doesn't guarantee entry, but it sure gives you a fighting chance! good luck!)
I'm already dragging after 13 movies and the film/interactive parties, but I know by tomorrow afternoon once music gets into full swing, I'll get a second wind. Just wanted to share two more great resources for free events for those without (or with) wristbands/badges. Enjoy ya'll! Two great day party pages: http://www.austin360.com/music/content/music/stories/2007/02/21sxswparties.html www.showlistaustin.com
pitchfork has some pretty good suggestions. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/The_Pitchfork_Guide_to_SXSW_2007#41663 my head already hurts...
the day shows are insane! theres just so much. im kind of glad im working during the day as my head would explode trying to figure out how to see everything i want too. there are a couple things i might hop on my bike and check out during the day. thankfully, im only about a 7 minute ride from downtown.
Can't believe this thing fell to the 4th page so fast... Melvins show was a blast -- great way to start the weekend. Hadn't seen them live since they played Liberty Lunch about 10 years ago -- that was an epic show in the perfect venue (RIP Liberty Lunch).
Did anyone catch Tom Morello at the Parish on Wednesday night? I was at the venue for the Aqualung acoustic set, and apparently Morello showed up early to watch the Aqualung set. In fact he was standing about 5 people behind me the whole time and no one was paying attention to the Aqualung concert, they kept watching Morello watch the show. Apparently Morello played the the very last set of the night for the venue. I had to leave to go to the Voxtrot set. I took some pictures of Morello tuning up before I left. So far the best bands I have seen thus far have been the New Violators at Emo's Jr. The Rosebuds were damn good as well. Mew had a great set at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase, although there were only about 250 total people there. Looking forward to Dappled Cities, Matt and Kim, Menomena, The Hourly Radio, Yo Majesty, and Andrew Bird, Bat for Lashes, 120 Days, Midlake and Tokyo Police Club next two days. Uhhh btw, was anyone at The Gossip show? lol.
The Melvins was incredible. It seems like they should have always had two drummers... Boris absolutely killed at that show, too. Today: Les Savy Fav at Red 7... whew...
Please tell me someone other than myself was at the Yo Majesty concert on Friday night at Beauty Bar. This might have been the greatest live performance of any genre, I have ever seen. (This is a rap act.) After 10 minutes of the sound check team screwing up and delaying the start, the 3 ladies of Yo Majesty, start getting angry and start shouting, they "are going **** ya up " to the sound check team. Then they get the crowd into the chant as well. Now the real excitement begins. Around the third of six song set one of the singers takes her top off and is rapping topless! Normally a female being topless is a good thing, but this girl was about 250 lbs. (sorry this is graphic, but must be told) Then suddenly, some dude from the audience somehow jumps on stage, and begins to suck the fat girls tittie. Nothing is mentioned of this occurrence, until the very end she is seems really pissed and says, "we are gonna find who ever sucked my titty and gonna beat yo ass. Then we gonna smack you upside the head." I don't know if most of the crowd around me got it, since it appeared that most of the audience was of the Euro zone. Probably something lost in translation. But half the crowd seemed to understand and are laughing uncontrollably. The show also included some finer female audience members dancing on stage and Yo Majesty starting an impromptu wet t-shirt contest for the audience members. The three ladies of Yo Majesty are self proclaimed, "three ghetto lesbians from the Dirty South." This was the most energetic concert, I've been to all week. Other than the Stubb's shows, this was the toughest show to get into. There is alot of hype around this band. Mostly European hype though. They play one last time on Saturday afternoon around 5PM at Trophy's. http://www.myspace.com/yomajesty4life
Rakim live today was something I really never expected to see in my life here in Austin -- major props. Thinking of a master plan...
Missed it. How big was the line to get it? Saturday day shows were a big letdown for me. It seemed like there was twice as many people trying to get into the same shows. Even with my badge, I had trouble at most venues.
I was shocked at how short the line was -- it was pretty much a full house by the time he went on. I don't think the door guys ever stopped letting people inside though because there was a pretty good amount of space left in the back.
I saw Ghostface Killa and Rakim @ Stubbs yesterday. Rakim was awesome! <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ggLNzyvnoAw"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ggLNzyvnoAw" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
