id say unless you have a wristband or badge you have no chance of getting into about 75% of those showcases. if im not mistaken, they will release more wristbands the week of sxsw (probably on tue or wed). these will be $160. the others were $130. i know they are going for about $250 on craigslist or ebay right now though, if you dont want to take any chances. the amount of wristbands they sell has dramatically decreased in recent years, as more yahoos are willing to fork over the cash for badges. more badges and less wristbands = more industry jack-holes and less average music fans. usually, these are private parties, but if you put the effort out it shouldnt be too hard to score an invitation. for example, they might announce that they will be giving away invites at a certain location at a certian time. show up and get one. or check their website - they may be giving away invites on there. they generally are not "walk-up" type deals though, although i have gotten into the high times show a couple times just walking up - and yes, they lived up to their name! yes, but there will be a couple shows on sunday too. walk - for the most part, it is all downtown. you might get a cab to go north or south of downtown. personally, i ride my bike and its great, zipping from venue to venue. if you have a bike i would highly reccommend bringing it up. the first batch of wristbands was 4,000. i would estimate that there are about 20k that show up for sxsw (counting the 1,000 or so bands and all their members). the badge will prevent you from having to wait inline unless a venue is filled. if there is a line of wristband people waiting to get in a person w/ a badge can walk up and cut infront of everyone. badge also gets you into all the mulitmedia stuff going on at the convention center. speakers and such (i think issac hayes is speaking this year). if you get a badge just keep in mind that most locals hate people with badges. for the most part they are the out of town industry types and stylin' scenesters. please dont be one of those people who wears the badge even when you are not at the festival! when i see someone at a restaurant with their badge hanging around their neck i want to strangle them with it. too many times to remember. but sometimes persistance pays off and ive gotten into some good shows after waiting for awhile. i have a feeling trying to get into the stooges on saturday will be an exercise in patience. only if it is at capacity. but like i said, badges can cut infront of wristbands. when a venue is at capacity it is basically as one person leaves, one person gets in and no matter how long someone w/ a wristband has been waiting, a person w/ a badge will get in first.

Question: Regarding day parties, are they generally free to get into? Meaning is anyone allowed to attend even if you don't have a wristband or badge? I found this list detailing all the day parties, but wasn't sure what the protocol was. I know some say invite only, but do the other ones which don't need an invitation require you have a badge or wristband? http://www.geocities.com/harmonica_talent/
typically, the "day parties" are free and do not require wristbands or badges. some parties require that you RSVP via some website/page. they are what SXSW is all about, in my opinion. have fun.
If I venture downtown at all that week, it will be on Friday to see Ozomatli and Public Enemy at Auditorium Shores.

Question #1 Is the actual SXSW badge/wristband portion from 8PM-1:30AM only? Question #2 Are the rest supposed to be classified as day shows? Is a day show the same as a day party? Question #3 I was reading some music blogs (like stereogum) and many of the bloggers said they don't even have a badge or wristband at all. Is this because most of the bands play free day shows and/or day parties?
1.) basically, yes. 2.) there are day shows/day parties and afterhours parties/shows -- none of which require wristbands/badges. some require rsvp... 3.) yes.
Oh yeah -- if you have the time ya'll check out my friends band... THE APPLICATORS http://www.myspace.com/theapplicators Show listing on their myspace.
Trying to get off work to catch the Melvins show -- didn't even realize you had something to do with that.
He's playing with Ghostface on the same bill. Ghostface had one of the best albums last year. Me personally, looking forward to UGK.
