http://www.lostremote.com/2007/02/05/directv-to-air-sxsw-2007/ DirecTV to air SXSW 2007 February 5th, 2007 For all you South by Southwest (SXSW) fans out there, DirecTV just did a deal to bring the music-design-tech event to TV, airing live March 15-17th. Press release… PRESS RELEASE — For two decades, the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas has been the industry’s best kept secret for breaking new acts such as Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and James Blunt. That’s all about to change as DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television service provider, teams up with music/entertainment guru Blaze TV to bring the nation’s biggest music showcase to national television for the first time in DIRECTV Presents SXSW Live. Exclusively on DIRECTV’s Channel 101 (The 101), the special will be broadcast live March 15-17 and feature unprecedented access with upfront performances and behind-the-scenes footage from the three day musical extravaganza. Last year’s event featured more than 1,400 bands played at 60 venues in downtown Austin, Texas. This year proves to provide more action with appearences by Pete Townshend and Rachel Fuller, The Stooges (with Iggy Pop), David Byrne, Ozomatli, Taylor Hicks, Amy Winehouse, Buzzcocks, Interpol, Razorlight, Hot Hot Heat, The Bravery and Booker T. Blaze TV is working with SXSW to custom-build two state-of-the-art venues exclusively for the SXSW special on The 101. The Lone Star Lounge, with a traditional Texas feel, and modern music club The Bat Bar will be built from the ground up in Austin solely for the live televised performances. Each venue will be filmed using the most up-to-date technology, including multi-camera HD with 5.1 surround sound. “SXSW has been the music world’s best kept secret. It’s to the music industry what Sundance is to the film business. You can’t move in Austin when SXSW is on, because of the packs of record company reps and producers thronging the venues … and the list of bands who have been discovered there reads like a Who’s Who,” said David Hill, DIRECTV’S President of Entertainment. “So we figured that for our customers, the mix of hot established bands and the hot new young bands would make for sensational, unique music programming, the likes of which has never been seen before.” “Blaze TV and SXSW share the same vision for creating content of the highest caliber,” stated Roland Swenson, managing director of SXSW. “And that coupled with the media power of DIRECTV will change the face of the festival by bringing it to the masses.” “We are delighted to take part in SXSW, one of the world’s truly great festivals,” offered Blaze managing director Conor McAnally. “With the innovative production approach we will be taking, we are excited to be able to share the extraordinary performances which SXSW inspires with audiences through DIRECTV.” About SXSW The SXSW Music and Media Conference showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over 50 states in downtown Austin. SXSW is the largest single music festival in the U.S., attended by record company and music media executives from all over the world, thus giving attending acts an unparalleled, showcase platform. By day, conference registrants do business in the SXSW Trade Show in the Austin Convention Center and partake of a full agenda of informative, provocative panel discussions featuring hundreds of speakers of international stature. SXSW 2007 will take place March 14-18, 2007. For more information, visit http://2007.sxsw.com/music.
well, i've heard that tom morello is going to be there with a solo project of his and that RATM is rumored to be accompanying him for the oh-so-popular secret show.... just a little grumbling i heard last time i was in ausitn. take it FWIW.
i had heard that it was probably going to happen during morello's set, but i talked to my friend (source) the other day and didnt seem as sure as he did a couple weeks ago. i heard jandek (houston "outsider" musican) will be performing at the presbyterian chruch on 8th st. - he played the scottish rite freemason temple a couple years ago and it was supposedly amazing. he has put out probably 100 albums of some of the most haunting and dissonent music since the late 70's, but untill a couple years ago had never played live. should be oddly cool. i did get to watch the les claypol (primus) debut movie, "ELECTRIC APRICOT: QUEST FOR FESTAROO" the other nite. he wrote, directed and stared in a spinal tap style movie about a "jam band" called electric apricot, which will be showing during the sxsw film fest. the premise of the movie seemed dumb, but i found myself laughing throughout. they pull out every hippie cliche you can think of. if you have actually been to a hippie concert (phish, disco buiscuits, string cheese) than you will really appreciate this (or be really offended). les plays the drums and sings and is actually not a bad drummer. like the actors playing spinal tap, the band actually has some original tunes that they perform, most notable one being "burning man" w/ les singing "im going down to burning man, susie's got a henna tattoo, grandpa's got his diggeridoo". trey parker and 'scott evil' (cant remember actors name) have a hilarious 3 minute cameo as "tapers" - the guys who are allowed to actually set-up and record the band from the audience. EDIT: i just found the website, where you can watch the trailer. www.electricapricot.com
An intersting interview in the Austin Chronicle with the SXSW Music Creative Director, Brent Grulke... http://www.austinchronicle.com/download/2007-02-02/059.pdf In other words, they don't really care that the casual music fan (like me) can't get in to see shows. It's an industry event, period.
While this interview has a good number of people up in arms, to be entirely accurate, the quote was in response to questions regarding the late release of the official lineup and not a person's ability (or lack thereof) to attend the event. Wristbands are still available to local's and will be sold at Waterloo within the next few weeks --- it'll be advertised the day before in the Chronicle as in past years. No word on the price...but it is a tiered system that increases as soon as a certain allotment is sold. The price started at $110 last year. The speculation is that the delay in releasing the schedule is due in large part to the expanded popularity of the free day parties. If the official lineups are not release until the last moment, it is significantly more difficult for the day party producers to put together a line-up and promote their event. Unfortunately, this also hurts the very lifeblood of the festival, the talent.
they dont really need to start rumors to sell tickets. those wristbands sell out every year now no matter who is playing. my friend sounded more certain about the show a couple weeks ago than he is now though. that being said, i heard the beatles are doing a suprise show. seriously though, the stooges will be at stubbs and mastadon will be playing a free show at town lake! i dont think town lake knows what is coming.
confirmed - public enemy doing a free show on auditorium shores w/ ozomatli. i saw them once at the unicorn w/ anthrax and primus in late 1991 - i touched flav's airwalk (yes, he wore skate shoes!) also, the "secret band from dallas" playing a free show at mohawk on i think saturday, is the polyphonic spree.
I think it's both. It's an industry event. Hence the very limited number of wristbands sold at only 1 location and the high price for them. Also, the cover charge to get in if you don't have a wristband is typically $25-30...that's if you can get near the door at all.
Initial official list was released at midnight by the SXSW folks. 1300 bands thus far... http://2007.sxsw.com/music/festival/
Ok Clutchfans. Lets help moi, a fellow Clutchfan, with info on how I can get me and girlfriend from H-Town into a couple of shows. I was never able to attend while I went to UT-Austin (had to work) so I'm not familiar with the protocol. ...and I dont want to drop the $450 thier asking for badges. Hell, I might as well go to Coachella with my sister for that kinda loot. I want to see Bloc Party Interpol Lily Allen 120 days Diplo RJD2 The Walkmen Ozomatli The Fratellis The Presets The Horrors Common people, help me get some brownie points with a cute Colombian female.
The armbands will be around $120 ea. Still doesn't guarantee you admission. I think Ozomatli is a free show at Auditorium Shores. The bigger name shows will be next to impossible to get into w/o a badge. Or, you can pay the $25 cover for each show...
So what your saying is that I can forget about RJD2 and just make due with Bloc Party and Interpol? These armbands are sold exclusively in Austin if I'm correct? How fast due they sell and when do they sell? Do i have to spend the night in front of Waterloo coz I haven't pulled an all nighter like that since.... The Beastie Boys played The Summit.
Never actually bought a wristband or badge before for SXSW. This is the first time I will be attending the whole week. I just realized that I will have some time off to get to Austin for the SXSW. Question # 1: Will I need a badge or wristband to get into these shows: Voxtrot Sound Team Peter, Bjorn and John The Bravery Cold War Kids Architecture In Helsinki Aqualung Bloc Party Midlake Mew Dappled Cities Fly The Hourly Radio Chris Garneau 120 Days Rodrigo y Gabriela Ghostland Observatory Matt and Kim Menomena The Presets Moi Caprice Tokyo Police Club Are these considered popular in SXSW terms and will be filled to capacity? Question #2: I like a bunch of shows that are being hosted by Filter Magazine. Do all these shows require a wristband? Or can anyone walk into the shows for a cover fee? Generally are magazine hosted shows filled to capacity? Question #3: The music portion runs from Wednesday, March 14 to Saturday March 18? Question #4: How do most people get from venue to venue? Question #5: Usually how many spectators show up for the music portion of SXSW? Question #6: I haven't bought a wristband or badge yet? The badges are going for $500 and the wristbands for about $250. I don't mind paying an extra $250 for a badge, but is it really worth it? In your previous experience have you been shut out of shows due to over capacity. Can you give me some examples of shows that you couldn't get into with a wristband only? Question #6: Is it possible to be shut out of a show even if you have a badge? Thanks. I just found out I can make it to Austin during these days, and had these questions, and I couldn't find the answers on any FAQ or Google.
