outrageous case of censorship by governmental actors in New York:

"Teen plans to sue LI school district for refusing to publish her George Floyd poem":

    https://nypost.com/2021/05/25/teen-to-sue-school-district-for-refusing-to-publish-george-floyd-poem/

    excerpt:

Long Island high-school officials refused to publish a 16-year-old student’s poem about the police-custody death of George Floyd to placate “white racism” in the dictrict, new court papers allege.

Ruby Ray, a white sophomore at Port Jefferson’s predominantly white Vandermeulen High School in Suffolk County, says she wrote “Derek Chauvin’s Ode to George Floyd: A Dark Sonnet’’ in late April and submitted it to her school’s literary magazine for publication — only to learn it was rebuffed Monday.

“I thought this was a free country and you have the right to express yourself in any way you choose,’’ Ruby told The Post after her family filed a $2 million notice of claim against the school in Suffolk County Supreme Court on Tuesday.

“That’s not the case in the Port Jefferson School District,” the 10th-grader said. “I felt it wasn’t America anymore.”

    ***
The family’s notice of claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, accuses school officials of blocking the poem “in order to please, protect, promote, placate and defend white racism in Respondents’ school and community, and white racism in general.”

The defendants — the district, Haruthunian and Sefick — believe the “white community would be offended and would act oppositionally to the sonnet which portrayed Derek Chauvin as a white racist,” it alleged.

The document notes that the racial makeup of the district and community is 79 percent white and 1 percent or less black.

It also argues that Ruby’s First Amendment right to free speech is being violated, and she is being discriminated against “on the basis of race and color, because Respondents regarded the Claimant as a writer and student who identified with and promoted the cause of African-Americans,” the papers say.

“My freedom to express and establish my own opinions — I thought that was my right,’’ Ruby told The Post.

“I thought I had all those things as a natural-born American citizen. And now I find out I don’t.’’

Her lawyer father, John Ray, who filed the court papers, argued the school’s refusal to publish his daughter’s poem “is just racist — that’s the only thing driving it.

“It’s a powerful poem,’’ he said. “It says what has to be said.’’

How is this censorship? Is the school's literary magazine obligated to publish every submission? If it is, then you could make the case it is censorship. But if they are not, and there's a selection process, I don't see how you can scream bloody censorship when your poem doesn't get selected.
