I disagree. For me, their romance only began to work when Padme began to gravitate towards Anakin after he was in pain on Tatooine ...

    BEGIN SPOILERS

... after he found out his mother was missing, then feeling his rage after his mother dies in his arms. The concern Padme showed for him on Tatooine felt real to me, probably because it was mostly shown with glances, etc. When Padme brought him food in his workshop, that communicated much more warmth to me than any of the stilited lines on Naboo. Much like Han and Leia, the romance was more real when it grew out of shared adventures. Not from a drawn-out wooing period filled with lines that made me want to projectile vomit. Naboo did look great, though.

    END SPOILERS

One complaint I have that I haven't seen yet was all the political crap. First of all, it was so confusing that I couldn't follow it -- and I work in politics! All that stuff about democracy and the supreme court and constitutional amendments to overturn term limits were such obvious references to modern day politics that it took me out of the story -- which is supposed to be a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Besides that, definitely a B to B plus. Very smart of Lucas to take a page out of the Bond films and have a thrilling action sequence right from the start. Best CGI ever. Brought back the "bad ass" quotient missing from Episode I (i.e. Yoda, Windu's fight scenes, Jango's armor, scenes in the original set of Luke's boyhood home). I, too, was buzzing when I left the movie.

That's cause I just copied and pasted the lines from the first site I came across with quotes. I thought that would be obvious. I still consider some of those quotes cheese...not as heavy on the cheese as the newer movies, though.

it really helps to kind of turn your brain off during all the political machinations and just keep in mind the big picture: there's a republic, ruled by a democratic senate and protected by the jedi, that palapatine is covertly breaking into shreds. and from that fissure, the empire will rise in power, led by palapatine, who will use the clones to wipe out the jedi.

that's the backbone of episode 1-3 in a nutshell.

None of those lines were cheesy. Maybe taking them out of context can make them seem that way, but in the movie, I wasn't cringing at any of them.

    Unlike...

    "My Anni, how you've grown."
"You've grown too... grown more beautiful that is."

    or...

    Annakin being a whiny b****...
"Its all Obi-Wan's fault, hes holding me back. boo ****ing hoo."

    or...

    "You're making fun of me"
"Oh... no.... I'd me much to frightened to tease a senator."

or... anytime Annakin said the word Master. It just sounded corny. Like Obi-Wan would scold him, and he'd say like "Sorry my master." Very cheesy. Very un-like "What is thy bidding, my master".

or... How the bad guy's name is Doodoo. As in ****.

or... how R2D2 didn't detect a droid slicing through the windows, or the life signs of those two insects.

or... how every single thing in that movie ****ing SHEENS. Like its been waxed down. Or just made on a computer.

As to the other question, Owen Lars was played by Phil Brown in "Star Wars (aka: A New Hope)," and Cliegg Lars was played by Jack Thompson in "Attack of the Clones."

Well yeah, I could tell it was just a simple copy and paste job, but what lines actually were cheesy that you posted?

the first 10 minutes of EMPIRE alone could keep many a wisconsin cheese maker in business, not to mention it contains the single most disturbing kiss in film history. but here's a sampling from the still-best one of the bunch:

Dak: Right now I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself!

Leia: Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder!
    Han: Who's scruffy-looking?

Han: Afraid I was gonna leave without giving you a goodbye kiss?
Leia : I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee!
Han: I can arrange that! You could use a good kiss!

Leia: I don't know where you get you delusions, laser brain!
    [Chewbacca laughs]
    Han: Laugh it up, fuzzball!

Leia: Would it help if I got out and pushed?
    Han: It might.
    ------------------------

as harrison ford said on the set of star wars, "george, you can write this ****, but that doesn't mean you can say it." limp, cheesy dialogue has always been a SW staple. ALWAYS.

Okay, you got me! I surrender! There is no cheese in any of the quotes I posted. I was grasping for some cheese that wasn't there. Maybe some poor dialogue in spots but no cheese like the newer movies. There is absolutely no cheese in the original SW trilogy. Whomever said that there was cheese....your a damn liar. George Lucas didn't invent cheese until Episode I.

I guess that makes me a cheesedick.

How the hell did Aunt Beru get an action figure? She was on screen for a good, what...five minutes? I wonder if they gave the gaffer and the head grip action action figures, also...

I assume that at some point in the future, C3PO and R2D2s memory will be erased and they'll start over. I assume that's possible in the Star Wars universe since Uncle Owen does tell Luke to go get R2D2's memory erased in the original Star Wars.

Did Uncle Owen get an action figure? I recently read an interview with the actor that played him and he said that not having an action figure was one of his only disappointments from playing the character.

except... if you'll recall in ANH, 3PO remembers being in the clone wars.

IMO, the inclusion of tattoine in parts 1-3 has created the biggest potential for gigantic plotholes, or convoluted storytelling. we find out in ep 6, luke and leia were hidden from anakin shortly after their birth... in ep 4, we meet luke and ben on tattonie (and thus, must assume, ben was watching over luke). the implication is that ben took luke to tattoine; to anakin's stepfather's, no less. how, then, does vader not know of luke's existence or wherabouts in ep 4? had his memory erased when he became more machine than man...? possibly, but then... how does he remember obi-wan? how does he know he's luke's father?

there's this and 3PO and R2 having no previous knowledge of tattoine, ben or the lars at the beginning of ep 4 that leaves lucas with lots o' 'splaining to do in episode 3.

That is not necessarily true because in ep4 3PO is translating R2 and says that they are the property of Obi-Won Kenobi, so somehow he takes possession of them after Anakin's complete transformation to the dark side. There is still the situation with Owen and Beru not being recognized by the droids in ep4 that Lucas needs to clarify in the upcoming ep3.

Kind of the problem with doing prequels, there's a lot of opportunity for continuity errors.

Maybe C3PO's memory gets erased between now and before the end of the clone wars (to be honest, I don't remember C3PO mentioning remembering the Clone Wars, but I've not watched the whole movie in a long time, and I've not yet seen the new one).

But yeah, that sort of stuff bothered me in Episode 1. You'd think that in ANH, C3PO would've said something like "Your name is Skywalker? Huh. The kid that built me was named Skywalker" or at least recognized the planet. In ANH, he didn't seem to recognize the Tatooine at all.

The reason R2D2 said he belonged to Obi Wan Kenobi was because Leia probably programmed that into R2 when she sent R2 to Obi Wan, in case R2 got lost along the way...

The one beef I have with the original trilogy is that, in Star Wars, C3P0 says "I'm just an interpreter, and not very good at telling stories", yet at the end of Return of the Jedi, he's telling basically the entire history of the Star Wars trilogy to the Ewoks (complete with sound effects!), and they seemed to be pretty interested...

Is this officially a "Star Wars Geek" thread yet? :D

The Ewoks are probably just easily entertained (especially since they thought he was a god or something at one point). But I thought the same thing the other day when I saw that part of Star Wars on tv the other day.
