The ability to drive a meaningless status symbol isn't too high on my list of freedoms. I'm more about public health, clean air, and a healthy environment.
Or we could just try mandating some stricter fuel efficiency standards. After the Arab oil embargo, Congress got smart and issued some standards and now we've done the opposite and some have gotten rolled back. The technology for better fuel economy is there but companies keep using it to boost horsepower rather than make cars more efficient. Even small mandates would be something. But outright banning SUVs would probably be way too extreme.
I thought we already had fuel efficiency standards. It's just that most SUVs and trucks are exempt from them. And also passenger safety standards. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Having said that, I'll buy a used SUV if their prices drop through the floor. It'd be nice to have a tow/offroad vehicle.
